Combined wireless AP/ADSL "modem"/router solution?

I've just tricked myself into buying a Linksys WRT54G wireless 4-port router thinking it had an ADSL "modem"*, turns out it doesn't have one. I already have an Alcatel 510 jobba which does my ADSL modeming and routing needs, which I thought I would replace with this all in one solution rather than buying a separate access point.

I'm now struggling to get the two routers to communicate happily

So, what products are out there that do the whole kaboodle?

Cheers

* given that it's NOT modulating or demodulating anything what's the correct term?

I am sad to say it, but none. It seems that you can't even find DSL modems except online any more. When you get on to your DSL, what software do you use and do you need a password ?

Why?

Because an Independent Cable/DSL Router is usually much more flexible, with many more security and other options, than the ?Awful? Modem/Router Cheappo combo that are usually given by the ISP.

Verizon down here gives us a seperate modem, it works quite well. Then you can go buy your own router.

no software, the password is just set and forget in the router.

First find out if there is a way to disable the Router function of the Modem/Router, to be used as a Modem only. If it can be done do, it and use the Linksys as your Router.

If the Router on the Modem/Router can not be disabled.

You can configure your Linksys to work as a Switch with an Access Point. Plug the Modem/Router (you might need a Crossover cable for it) to a regular port on the Linksys.

Configuration instructions here: Using a Wireless Cable/DSL Router as a Switch with an Access Point

No guarantee that it will work, it depends on the internal nature of the Modem/Router.

BTW. Here in the USA I would invest $70 and buy an External Ethernet DSL Modem.

You can buy a nice ethernet DSL modem such as the Alcatel Speed touch home for about $50 on ebay then use that with your new router, or the Cayman 3220H is a business class Modem/Router combo but does not have wireless. The cayman is $100 to $150 online. Then add a good wireless access point. My personal tests have always found that I get better results with a separate router, wireless acess point and DSL modem. Then if one goes bad its only $50 to 80 to replace vs $200+ for a all in one device. IMHO

I'm actually very happy with my current router, so will take this Linksys one back and change it for a normal access point.
