Combination lock problem

I got one of these at a yard sale but one of the two latches won't open. That side's combination lock is still set to 0 0 0, and still has the factory plastic chord through it, so it shouldn't have been set. Anything I can do to fix it or find the correct combination if it's not broken, short of breaking the latch open?

C'mon, it's only 3 digits...

Whats the calculation to find the amount of permeatations (spelling?)? I forgot it :(

Permutations (think "mutation").

You take the number of values on each slider and then slap on an exponent for how many sliders there are.

So if you've got 3 sliders and each is numbered from 0-8, then you have 9 possible values on each slider. 9^3=729 possible combinations. If the sliders are numbered 0-9, then you have 10 possible values. 10^3 = 1000.

I once had a bike lock that had 4 sliders 0-7. Starting from 0-0-0-0 I got the right one in about 30 minutes. Just sat down in front of the TV, watched some 'toons, and let my fingers do the work.

No. and what was it?
I haven't tried to find it.

Yes, it's 0-9, so 1000 possible combos. And there's a chance that it's already on the correct combo (000), but just won't open because of a latch problem.
