This is not the "don't buy gas on a certain day" idea. Don't shoot the messenger... let's hear the opinions...

this has been discussed before...i don't remember who said it, maybe Russ, but bottom line was, it won't work.

The cheapest gas prices in my town are from locally owned stations anyway.

Looks like the perfect chain letter to me. This wouldn't work because most people buy gas at the most convenient place. I see people driving 2 blocks to return a movie, does this person really think people will go out of their way to purchase gas. Not gonna happen.

ok, i'm going to go out on a limb here........isnt gas $2-3 more in other countries than in the US? now, granted refining technology varies and taxes have a large part of the final price, but we have it really good here.

$1.50 isnt a hell of a lot, remember when truckers went on strike in GBR cause diesel was like $5 a gal?

Compared to the rest of the world gas in the US is cheap. If people really cared about gas prices they wouldn't be driving around SUVs. People like to whine about them but gas really doesn't cost that much.

oh, and just boycotting XOM wouldnt do anything.

lets say the US uses 1 billion barrels of oil every day (arbitrary number)

well, if we dont buy from XOM we'll buy from everyone else. demand stays fuffilled and oil still comes into the country from a different company. now, demand is still the same, as well as supply.

this would drop oil prices......how?

Gas is relatively inelastic. Most people are going to buy it regardless of price.

Gas companies aren't going to drop their prices, they'll just raise them to make up for lost volume. They have much better economies of scale compared to the little guys and could drop them I guess. I've just never seen it done.

Didn't take much to figure it was from an email... duh. Chain letters mean you should forward them so they in turn can forward it. I'm just asking for your opinions on this idea.

Around here, there are 2,3,4 gas stations facing each other on street corners (sometimes even all 4 corners). I guess the author's hope is to sway people's choice from at least Exxon/Mobil. Is that such a bad thing? Isn't gas all the same anyway?

Around here gas is $1.30/gallon anyway, so why should I care? :)
Besides...I love my Exxon/Mobil Speedpass.

I have Speedpass. But I'd rather go across the street to Hess and spend an extra 5 seconds swiping my card to save 4 cents per gallon in my 21.9 gallon tank. ;)

In my city, there are like 4 Exxon/Mobile to 1 Amoco. There is no Shell or any other brand to be found.

<< I guess the author's hope is to sway people's choice from at least Exxon/Mobil. >>

Exactly. My guess is that the person who started this letter is shorting XOM stock.

I don't think it's going to work. If you need gas, then you have to pay for it. Just like a smoker, they have to buy their joint to smoke if it's like $4 a pack or something

You want to know what I did to help combat gas prices, I just got a car that if I am lucky I will probably get like 16mpg ;)

From the original post: Since we all rely on our cars, we can't just stop buying gas.

I find it funny that none of the schemes proposed to get Big Oil to lower prices ever focus on using less gas.

Now, that would work. Oh, but there would be some inconvenience involved.

Maybe people need to consider buying cars based on fuel-efficiency again. We have a '90 Subaru Legacy wagon that gets 28-31mpg in the city based on our records. The most fuel efficient 2002 models only get 21mpg. That's for a 4-cylinder! That's insane!

The logical problem with this, is that firms set prices based on their costs and their sales. If Exxon/Mobil lose sales and lower prices, the other firms with increased sales will increase prices. The only way for this to work would be for people to boycott all gas stations.
