Hi

Two things. Is Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator any good. And what will it be like on a AMD 2000 with 128 GF4TI and 512MB RAM.

I have a basic Gravis joystick as well.

Cheers

Just wondering as I know flight sims kill systems... haven't built it yet as my finacee has bought it for me for Christmas 🙂

Ok. I'll have a look at that. I've been out of the gaming market for a while and I after something good. Plays good and looks good.

CFS3 is so so (as released), maybe extensive community modding and official patch will improve it , but for now I'd recommend you to stay away from it. I think that the code isn't optimized enough (like MSFS2000 used to be), and even with GF4 you'll most likely see slideshow/stuttering time to time. Gameplay isn't any great neither, external graphics OK, cockpits average or worse, some cockpits graphics are either unfinished, or generic, or with glitches (like crosshairs off etc). I shelved the game, and waiting for patches/mods....

Get IL2 instead if you want a decent WW2 sim.

hope this helps

... I forgot to add one last important observation about CFS3; the game locked-up/froze rock solid my WinXP rig with 5 minutes of running (no game EVER locked this box, have it about a year and has about 20 games on, incl. Il-2, MSFS2002, GhostRecon, OperationFlashpoint , you name it)... read some reviews on Amazon, it gets like 2 stars out of 5 or so.

CFS3 will probably tax your system. It seems to practically tax everyone's. I think MS designed with future hardware in mind.

In terms of game quality, I think it's plain fun. No, it's not the most sophisticated and polished sim out there (IL-2 is now and Forgotten Battles released in Feb will be good). However, I find myself having a lot more fun with CFS3 because of it's dynamic campaign and the American and British planes available. I personally find IL-2 kind of sterile and have very little interest in the Russian planes.

I think it depends on what kind of game/sim you are looking for. CFS3 has its bugs, but I think it's more fun. If you are a simulator nit-picker and realism junkie than definitely go with IL-2 because the flight models in CFS3 are simplified. I find that the message boards are pretty good at SimHQ. You might want to check around there to get a feeling for the game.

Good plan. CFS3 is just an arcade game, fun for some. I'll also suggest IL-2. Download the demo and give it a whirl. It'll certainly tax your system, if that's the intent.

I've been simming for 20 years now, and I have to say that IL-2 has restored my faith in the flight sim genre as well as software in general. The attention to detail is nothing short of astounding. The program is rock solid yet gets continued support from the developer for new additions, etc... Your system should run IL-2 nicely. It is an amazing program for sure. If you never fly it, you'll never know what you're missing. IL-2 is orders of magnitude above CFS3. It requires a steep learning curve due to it's realism but that is why it is so fun -- you'll be playing it every day a year from now. Also, it's sequel is due out in a few months. It's called "Forgotten Battles" and is published by Ubisoft.

I love taking off and "trying" to land in IL2, scares the hell outta me, just what sim should do! 😛

Is it a sequel or is it an add on?

It's both. It takes the existing IL-2 content and updates the engine and planes. The only part of "Forgotten Battles" that will not be from IL-2 will be the original single player campaigns. All other IL-2 content will be included in FB.
