I have Windows 7 64 bit. Recently everytime I start the PC I get the error:

Had a look at google and it seems that this affects people browsing there pics. However I can browse my pics with thumbnails on without any errors and this problem only occurs when I boot up, also don't have Nero installed. Rather not turn off DEP, prefer to cure the problem not the sympton.

Any ides please?

This link: Windows 7 DLL File Information - msmpeg2vdec.dll has the details on the faulting module. There are 14 Windows system files that are automatically loaded when msmpeg2vdec.dll is loaded. If one of those other 14 files is corrupted or missing, msmpeg2vdec.dll won't be loaded.

If you've just recently begun seeing this error I'd suggest first running CHKDSK followed by SFC, from an elevated command prompt, which will eliminate disk and file system errors as well as corrupt system files as possible culprits.

If the error persists see this article: Fix for COM Surrogate Has Stopped Working Error. In particular; read the last section on turning off DEP for "dllhost.exe".
