Com port troubles on Toshiba 3110CT laptop

When my housemate tries to connect to various devices on his laptop using HyperTerminal he gets a "unable to open COM1" message - any ideas?

Make sure he doesn't have a modem that is using the same resources that the Com1 typically takes. This happens with many modems especially built in modems.
If it is using them then change the settings for the Com1 or for the modem whichever is easier for him to change.

Odd thing is it worked fine one moment, and then not a few miutes later. He was doing some diagnostics on a megasquirt ECU he was building, personally I reckon some bad electronics has fried his com port
