i am writing an algebra test where i want the problems on the left, and there to be blank spaces on the right for students to put the answers.

i could do this with columns in word, but then if i change questions, the columns will shift, and that's a bunch of trouble.

i could just tab over and put a number and a line, but it is still hard to move questions and such.

is there an easy way to have two columns and have them independent of each other?

thank you.

I would set up a two-column table that spans the width of the page. You can set the tables border property so that it appears invisible, giving you the control of the table layout without the appearance.

That's what I would do too.

If you want to give the students a line to answer on, you can select the second half of the table, right click, borders and shading, then in the box on the right choose the line in the middle and the one on the bottom. This will give the students a line to write their answer on, but will leave the question area unbordered.
