So...why do we have the day off (not complaining) for Columbus Day if he never discovered America?

He opened the gates for the Europeans to come to America in droves. The Vikings that made it over first only founded a failed colony in Newfoundland and didn't document the trip. Columbus did. I gather Columbus was pretty hated as a colonial leader though.

Either way, I get the day off and thats they way I likes it. Anyone who tries to get the holiday repealed should have their tongue removed. :p
