Not even related to the genocide accusations.

1. Federal employees get this day off as a paid holiday.
2. No one else does.
3. It isn't a time to get together with family or to celebrate the change of seasons.

But yeah, it's basically another excuse for federal employees to...not work, and still be paid. BS.

It's not even a bank holiday anymore. I went to Chase today and my mortgage broker was at work too (also Chase).

And here I was thinking you were going to talk about genocide.

EVERY working man and woman in the USA should get, at a minimum, the exact paid holidays that government workers get. If the state workers get more, the citizens of that state get those, if the feds get more, that's what they get. (at a minimum, this rant is not about trying to reduce paid holidays for those who get 47 paid holidays each year. :p )

If you wanna be fiscally conservative, and care about the deficit, crap like Columbus Day adds up over the decades...as do toll roads and state monopolies on liquor.

I like toll roads. It taxes the people who use the resource. Of course, they should be cutting money grabs elsewhere. Property tax, and death taxes should be eliminated.

Kids get off from school too, which means teachers get yet another day off and the tax paying parents hard at work have to spend extra money on child care. Thanks!

Yom Kippur is tomorrow and they're off again...

Let's give us Chinese New Year off too.

I don't think any of the schools around me got the day off.

Its not like those tax paying parents never demand more holidays for their kids. There have been some pretty well publicized and a quite a few less publicized parental demands for various days off like Yom Kippur, the Lunar New Year, Eid al-Adha etc etc

I don't think any of the schools around me got the day off.

I'm pretty sure most of SE Michigan had school

I don't understand why the US government is spending so much money celebrating an Italian for something he didn't do.

I think it's under celebrated. I recently bought a flag carried by Columbus' fellow captains, just don't have a flagpole yet.
I've also thought of wearing a comb morion helmet to mark the day. Not sure how that would fly at work though.

conquest way the way of the world back then. someone in europe would have invariably conquered the americas had columbus not done it. whoever had the biggest weapons made the rules.

besides, the mongols get genghis khan day - that guy was way worse than columbus.

To be fair, in Mongolia that would basically be the equivalent of "Great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandfather day". Family values and all that.
