dont like either, what's with putting the company logos on the outside of the product, it should be on the inside, dont feel like being a walking billboard.

That's the thing I hate the most about a lot of the big jacket makers - names are plastered everywhere.

North Face: we'll put our logo on your chest, and on your back. We need to make sure everyone that looks at you can clearly tell you are wearing one of our jackets, no matter where they are in relation to you.

Then again, some people demand that.

You think I paid this much money so that some bum can mistake this for some cheap $15 no-name clearance jacket that happens to look similar? I need people to know I'm not cheap!

love my patagonia jacket. i had a columbia jacket for years. the different is really day and night. when my patagonia jacket came in the box, i couldn't believe my jacket was in there because it is just so small. I paid $240 shipped when it was on sale, the price was like $400.

it held up so well, i was planning for a 6 months trip to south america. i climbed 20k feet in this jacket.

I have a Columbia and it is fine in -40 weather. It's not so bulky either. I normally buy cheapy no-name brands and they're so bulky and rigid. It actually does pay to go a bit more high end. I paid 100ish for it, so nothing insane. I usually keep the same coat for at least a few years, this one may end up lasting me longer too.

-40 weather? I didn't think any normal coats could handle that. Don't you get frostbite in like 2 seconds at that temp?

Whatever is cheaper...

If you actually do a lot of outdoor stuff, the north face is superior but more expensive. They make a lot of good technical clothing for mountain climbing, skiing, etc.

I bought a lot of North Face stuff around 1998 - 2001 and it is all still in excellent condition. I also really like ArcTeryx.

I have a light weight fleece Columbia jacket I bought on major clearance in 2001, and its still intact without any issues. I only paid around 7 bucks for it though, with clearance and employee discounts. I also have a light North Face fleece pull over, designed for cooler weather running. It works well and I've had it for a few years now without any wear, tear, or other visible damage. Don't remember what I paid for it though.

neither...REI brand lightweight rain jacket ive had for like 8 years now and havent had an issue with. Then i have two Flylow brand jackets....Higgins and the BA Puffy. Stay dry as can be skiing in the PNW all day. Higgins is great for the 25F+ days and hiking around in. The BA Puffy is great for the colder days or just resort skiing.

ArcTeryx and patagonia make good jackets...they are just overpriced if you look at similar jackets offered by other companies. You pay for the name on a lot of the big name stuff anymore.

Great first post, n00b. Revive a 3 year old thread to add nothing to the conversation.

Though it's funny that Kohl's takes a search of keywords "north face" and comes back with "The North Face(R)" like it know's the technical brand name even though it doesn't sell it.

Both make pretty good quality jackets. (have owned several of each)

On the other hand North face makes gear you'll actually see being used by professional mountain climbers. They were around a long time before they became trendy and contrary to popular opinion around here make some serious equipment.
