Columbia House was king in the LP days. Many, many, many kiddies went for the upfront haul of cheapies/freebies and then couldn't or didn't want to follow through on the back end.
BMG was king of the cd days. They actually had decent overall deals, especially if you were patient and waited for their extra special "half (discount) price/even extra cd's up front deals you could find in Rolling Stone back when RS was actually relevant. Yes, Rolling Stone was once hip and relevant. Hard to believe, I know. 😉
