Report: Colt Brennan in serious condition

According to various reports, former Redskins QB – and former Hawaii star – Colt Brennan has been hurt in a car accident in Hawaii.

KHON2 News in Honolulu reports he’s in serious condition at a Kona hospital and that Brennan crossed the center line and hit another vehicle head-on.

Brennan was drafted in the sixth round of the 2008 NFL draft by Washington, which released him in the preseason of this year. He then signed with the Raiders but was cut just before the regular season began.

More on this story as it develops.

UPDATE (6:39 p.m.): The Honolulu Star Advertiser has some good info regarding the accident.

The incident occured at 2:30 p.m. ET (that's 9:30 a.m. local time), and Brennan might have suffered head injuries. He was taken to the hospital with face lacerations. He was a passenger in the car, not driving it.

UPDATE (8:31 p.m.): Ryan Tollner, Brennan's agent, has released a statement (H/T to Mac's Football Blog )

"We have been informed that Colt was injured as a passenger in car accident this morning on The Big Island of Hawaii. He was taken to Kona Community Hospital and has since been transported to Honolulu for further medical attention. We do not know the severity of his injuries at this point, but that his condition is serious. We are not aware of the status of anyone else involved in the accident but our thoughts and prayers are with them. No details of the accident have been revealed to us. Colt’s family asks that the public is respectful of the hospitals and medical staffs focused on treating the individuals involved in this accident."

UPDATE (10:34 p.m.): Todd Wright of Sporting News Radio received a text from Brennan's former coach at Hawaii, June Jones. It read: "Broken ribs, collarbone, head trauma. Life flight to Honolulu from Kona."

UPDATE (10:50 p.m.): Brennan's father, Terry Brennan, has told the Star Advertiser that his son is listed in stable condition with head trauma, several broken ribs and a broken left clavicle.

"We're upset," Terry Brennan told the paper. "We're hopeful all of the victims are OK. This is our worst nightmare. You always worry about safety, whether you're in Hawaii or on the mainland."

Brennan was the passenger in a SUV driven by his girlfriend, Shakti Stream. After the head-on collision, Stream managed to crawl from the car, but Brennan was stuck inside. The driver of the other vehicle, a 47-year-old woman, also was taken to the hospital in serious condition.

The police have opened two negligant injury investigations, and at this point, it's unclear whether speed, alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.

UPDATE (12:00 a.m.): KHON2.com interviewed witnesses to the accident.

Said Damien Julius, a truck driver, on finding a man pinned inside the SUV (he didn't know it was Brennan at first):

"From the way he was positioned under the vehicle I saw his head and I could hear him screaming and I was trying to put the towel because there was bleeding coming, yeah," said Julius. "There was a small crack, I would say about a foot that he was trying to squeeze out of that his head could barely fit out of but he was moving, he was trying to get out of the car."

It is clear that a woman played a role in the crash.
