Colourful Snowstorm in-game

Just recently bought a new harddrive and did a fresh install of XP and the latest catalyst driver. Now the strange thing is whenever I start playing any game (Call of Duty, Warcraft 3, Age of Mythology) it'll be fine for a while and then suddenly I'll get snow of all sorts of colours flickering all over the screen like bad receptionion. In the case of Call of Duty, I get these interesting (but unwanted) kaleidascope effects too.

Once I exit the game, i'll still see bits of flecks and lines of pixels on my desktop which go away after a a few refreshes.

I havn't had this problem ever on my old HD. Could it be a driver problem? Or maybe some sort of setting I've got wrong. Any ideas would be appreciated before I get desperate and do a format.

those are remnants and if your gpu is oc it needs to be tufned bown a notch or two, hdds and vgf are not connecter unless the files on the hdd are corupted. also you could try to reinstall the drivers from the origanol cd and then upgrade from there i had an ati card with this same prob it liked the origanol drivers to start with
if you do this remember to go to the device manager and remove the card before reboot

Ah thanks. I had forgotten the vidcard came with a cd with drivers that worked perfectly fine. After some twiddling I uninstalled and reinstalled and everything seems peachy for now.

I don't know much about driver software and such but is it a wrong impression to have that "newer" versions should be better? 😕
