A fish from the deep would probably suffer decompression when brought up. It didnt' have much of a chance of living.

A fish from the deep would probably suffer decompression when brought up. It didnt' have much of a chance of living.

it was still munching on its dinner, tho, which makes you think it still had life left in it

Exactly. The squid was fine, eating his/her/its dinner. Just amazes me.

Damn, a half-ton squid...that's amazing. Hard to really gauge the size from pictures, I imagine it would be quite impressive in real life. I wonder if it squirmed around at all...must've been hell for the fishermen.

Exactly. The squid was fine, eating his/her/its dinner. Just amazes me.

What did you expect it to be doing, hooking up it's air supply? The fact that it was eating says nothing, it could have continued munching until it died. You can't possibly make that determination from here, and the people were in position to make that determination, made the call that it would probably die anyway.

Giant squid are not rare. We just don't see them much. Also I have read a report about the same incident where they say the fisherman said the squid was nearly dead by the end of the fight.
