But I agree, the fast-food cramming fatties are repulsive.

200 lbs is not a big guy if you are 5 ft 11 or taller as most men are.

I'd venture to say that 230+ is starting to get big..

We can't go a week without beating on them :)

And then they get all sad and have to eat a gallon of ice cream to drown their sorrows :D

I think that momentum is a big reason why people are so fat (please, hold the jokes)...the truly fat ones built up their habits as a kid, and by the time they were old enough to know better, they were so fat that even a very difficult lifestyle change wouldn't make them skinny again. Once you're past a certain point, you'll always be fat...it's just a question of how fat.

There's not much motivation for the 500-pounders to lose 200 pounds, for example.

It is mostly a self control issue. I weighed 290 pounds last August - now I weigh 198 (and it is a lot of muscle mass). I did it the old fashioned way of diet and excercise and it always makes me laugh at all these fad diets. Everyone wants a gimick because no one wnats to work hard for anything. Oh well. I lost weight and Im glad I did and I bet a lot of people would be a lot happier in this country if they did the same.

Oh, here, are some pics of my weight loss progress.

Were you eating "a lot" before you dieted, or was it just the foods you ate that you changed?

It was both I think. I used to eat a lot of calories and bad ones at that. I also would eat large (carb loaded) meals right before bed. I also used to eat a lot of junk food. And I'd drink 2-3 20oz sodas a day too. I think all told I probably at ~4000-5000 calories a day. Now I eat around 2500 (and go to the gym 5 days a week).

My problem is that I hate to work out. I've never found anything at a gym that holds my attention for very long, and I don't enjoy running. Winters are hard for me because I usually end up gaining a few pounds. But come summer I shed it fairly quickly because I do some much work outside. I love to cut grass, garden, landscape, etc, so that stuff really gets me back. I've already lost all the weight I gained this past winter.

I just wish I knew what to do in the winter.

Thanks. I am pretty happy with my weight now. I am focusing on shedding a little bit more fat and putting on a bit more muscle. I am built pretty big (broad shoulders, strong legs) - more of a football player build then a sprinter or something - so if I lost a lot more weight I'd look wasted away I think.

iamwiz82, what about active hobbies like rock walls and stuff? If you had an interest in that it might be a good cold-weather activity. Or maybe a martial art? Indoor gardening doesn't work so well I guess.

Try boxing, kickboxing, jiujitsu (the brazillian kind), judo, etc. Great ways to stay in shape without 'working out'.

I cycle. Put on a bunch of clothes and go out for a ride. :)
Do a class: aerobics, yoga, pilates, step, Spin. Out of all of these, I believe Spin class is viewed as the least effeminate, but I think Yoga might be a good one too. I Spin quite frequently myself, and when I get more time I want to do a Yoga class. I know a guy in one of the Spin classes that is on Team USA for the 100m dash and a few other longer distance runs. The guy is huge and cut, but he says the Spin class gives him a great workout (more endurance then explosiveness). Spin class is very good with a decent instructor and is somewhat fun.

No, it doesn't. It depends on many factors, as evidenced here.

No, you're wrong.

When it all comes down to it...if you intake more calories than they burn then they gain weight...if they burn more than they consume then they lose weight.

It IS that simple....

No, it's not.

A gallon of gasoline has about 31,000 calories. Yet, if you drink it, I'm pretty sure you won't gain weight. The human body can only use certain kinds of calories.

EDITED for wiki data :)

If you cut out old people (50+?) who are going to be increasingly shorter, then I would bet the average American male is pretty close to 5'10+. That's not far enough away from 5'11 to matter very much.

EDITED for wiki data :)

If you cut out old people (50+?) who are going to be increasingly shorter, then I would bet the average American male is pretty close to 5'10+. That's not far enough away from 5'11 to matter very much.

eh? You can't just make sh1t like that up ;) 5'11 (which is adding 2inches to that data) would certainly be statistically significantly different to 5'10 in that kind of a survey ;)

Anyway, you still fail at life (well, statistics ;)), what does an average mean again?

But I agree, the fast-food cramming fatties are repulsive.

Yup. I eat my butt off and can't gain weight :(

The bottom line is that if you aren't gaining weight, then you aren't eating enough, period. I know people on a weightlifting board who eat 8k cals/day.

Fatty sqeezes his lard ass though the front door and wobbles to his equally bloated SUV. While weezing from his 15 foot wobble to his roaming land yacht he manages to raise his arm to open the door. After slothfully slinging his enormous jello like buttocks into the drivers seat of the SUV he wipes the dripping sweat from his flapping jowl. He starts the SUV and begins his journey. The SUVs suspension, under the huge weight of Fatty, tips to the side while guzzling down the road. When pulling into the parking lot of Fast Food for Fatties the SUV squeaks and rattles with great stress. After the hard physical workout of driving Fatty finally manages to reach the handle to open the door. Upon doing so, the fat doughy flesh ozzes from the drivers side opening and Fatty emerges from his bloatmobile. Fatty then embarks on the last leg of his journey. He pulls up his fatty waist off of the ground as if pulling up a pair of pants and then wobbles his way to the door. As he wobbles the ground shakes with such force that it causes nearby trees to uproot and leap from the ground. Fatty wipes his jowl of sweat once more and opens the door to Fast Food for Fatties. He squishes his way through the entrance to make way to the counter. He wheezes his order to the clerk and tells them to add a side order of burger fat drippings to wash everything down. His order of 10 of everything is ready and he grabs the tray with his hot dog shaped fingers. He sits down to his table while drool cascades down his watermellon shaped face and disappears into some of the many fat rolls. The shockwave from the seating registers 5.7 on nearby Richter scales. A great shot of adrenalin surges through Fatty and his arms begin to flail like windmills to shovel the large quantities of food down his gullet.
