Colored lines on HP laptop. Help!!!!

Hey guys!!!

I have a HP and this laptop started to show some colored lines on the screen.

So I bought a new screen and the problem seemed to be fixed.

A couple of hours later of using the laptop the lines came back again???????

So I opened the screen again and I moved the LCD cable and the lines were gone 🙂

But hours later the lines came back again?????


I think the problem is with the LCD cable that connects the screen right?


What do you think?
 
Could be the cable, could be graphics memory. Is it using integrated Intel or Nvidia? HP laptops with Nvidia integrated graphics are notorious for their GPUs going bad. Every time I get an HP in for repair, that's typically the only issue I ever see.

Your cheapest option is to buy a cable on eBay and try replacing it. If the problem persists, I'm going to go with the bad GPU option. I'm assuming you're not under warranty any longer?

Just a thought/ guess: Try downloading gpu-z and checking the temperatures of the gpu. The fact that a few hours of use after being turned off causes screen corruption could indicate the gpu isn't being cooled properly. Does the laptop feel hot?
 
It's not the temperature, I know that for sure.
Yes I think the problem is the cable.
I'm going to try the cable and if the lines keep coming back then I would have to go ahead and open the laptop do to the REFLOW TRICK to the GPU.
((I have done this like 9 times successfuly)) son dont worry.
This computer has Nvidia.
 
Do you have an external monitor available? Connect the laptop to a monitor, if you only get lines on the laptop display and not the external monitor you can rule out the graphics card/memory.

At that point start wiggling the display, move it forward and backwards, see if the lines appear/disappear. That would indicate something with the connection, the cable. Otherwise you are looking at a display issue.

What model laptop is it? I fix HP laptops all the time, depeding on the model a replacement display is very easy to swap out. Some are nightmares, some are four screws and the keyboard. (Oh, I see you replaced the display already. In that case I would suspect the cable as well, pop the keyboard off and see what you find... I suppose I should start reading entire posts before I reply. 🙂 )
 
It's the cable/LCD itself not your GPU. This happens after some time with most LCDs on laptops, the wear and tear ends up damaging sections of the cable. Sometimes you end up losing just 1 connection somewhere and you get a horizontal line. Vertical lines don't happen because of the way LCDs are wired.

Am I close?

I get LCDs in with vertical lines almost all the time, I rarely see horizontal. Also, with recent HP laptops with Nvidia graphics, the problem is graphics more often than it is actual LCD or cable. I've gone through a lot of these.

Anyway, the OP should have enough info now to check whether or not it's his LCD, cable, or GPU with the stuff in this thread. Good luck!

I just replaced the LCD Cable that is behind the screen and I've been using the laptop for the whole day and havent seen no lines anymore!

Hi,

You might see the presence of random lines all over the screen in some occasions in your HP Laptop. Often, troubles are created due to this. You would see the vertical and horizontal lines. You could solve this problem easily with the help of LCD BIST test. For this you would have to press the function key and follow the instruction as the LCD BIST runs several colored screen.

So what I get is....

1) your laptop has "coloured lines" on the screen the laptop has.

2) You bought a new PC monitor, and hooked that up to the laptop, no lines where shown on that monitor.

3) Your PC monitor hooked up to your laptop, started showing lines too.

Answear: it has nothing to do with your Laptops screen, or your PC monitor.

Its most likely your laptops GPU.

didnt see OP's last post, where he said he got it working fine for almost a intire day.

^^ If I'm understanding things correctly, he never bought/attached an external display at all. His notebook developed lines, he bought a replacement LCD panel, installed it, lines came back, he jiggled with the cable, it went away and then came back. Finally he replaced the internal display cable, and it's fixed.

At least I think.

External display is soooooo helpful in diagnosing these kinds of issues.
