Colored Golf Balls

Why don't golf balls come in different colors very often? Like 99% of them are white. It seems to me like white is harder to see when trying to see where your shot goes, and it can be hard to find (especially on a course with mushrooms everywhere...but i've only played one of those). When you hit a white golf ball into the sky it can easily blend in with the clouds. I want some neon orange golf balls...like the kind they would give you at a mini golf place 😀 - I guess colored golf balls probably wouldn't be as good as quality as regular ones though, at least not in most cases, since all major brands make only white golf balls.

but white contrasts the best agains the dark green of the golf course IMHO.

try finding that orange ball during the fall.
 
Because using neon balls = turn in your man card.

Really: that's the reason; if more people wanted to play golf with mini-putt balls, there would be more available for purchase.

that and trying to find an orange golfball with orange leafs all over the place kinda sucks.
 
It's all a matter of aerodynamics. First of all, there is a thing called a "boundary layer" on a body moving through a fluid - it's a thing region around the object where the velocity gradient (changes) are very high. This boundary layer is what causes lift on airfoils, but it also causes shear stress drag. On slim bodies, the drag is mostly shear stress drag. For bigger bodies such as spheres, the boundary layer separates from the body, causing a lot of pressure drag. This is way golf balls are dimpled - so the boundary layer gets more energy and does not separate from the ball, keeping the drag down. When you heat this boundary layer, it becomes unstable and tends to separate more quickly. This is why balls are white - they attract the least amount of heat and cause the least amount of boundary layer separation. White balls fly farther than balls of any other color. Oh, and one more thing - I completely made this up... at least the whole color/heat thing.
 
There might be rules against it in the sanctioning bodies for golf. If there are, the market for colored balls would be too small to make it much of a moneymaker for the manufacturers.

Imagine if you are a weekend golfer and hit a hole in one on a tough par four. Even if you have the proper witnesses, probably wouldn't get the recognition you want if you had a non standard ball.

Ya that sounded almost plausible...
 
Any color you like.

There are quite a few different colored balls around, mostly marketed towards women. The Volviks are fairly decent balls for the price. The normal white ones are by FAR easier to see than any other color under 99% of the conditions you'll normally face. Contrary to what might seem logical, the orange ones are not all that visible. Up close they're fine, but from a distance they get darker and are hard to see. If you're playing a white ball and losing it among the mushrooms you need to changes courses, not balls.
 
Most of golf is tradition and it is tradition for a golf ball to be white.

Also it is tradition to wear pants, mark your ball, etc...

I tried using a 12-pack of yellow balls (bought on accident) and they were a lot harder to find in the green grass..

I also had a pink ball (breast cancer awareness one) and I lost it first drive even though I was sure it was just off the fairway about 2 ft in the rough..

It just seems that white are the easiest to find..
