Color changes to 8 bit

My stepdaughter called me with a problem that I have never even heard of. She said that when she opens her web browser (Yucky AOL!) the color quality on the screen turns all blocky, and she has to go into control panel and change the settings from (8?) bit back to 32. Has ANYONE ever heard of this before? Running XP with SP2.

She probably set the "compatibility settings" (right click properties on the shortcut or EXE) for the AOL browser to run under 256 colors. That will change the whole screen to 256 colors until the application is terminated.
