A homeowners association in southwestern Colorado has threatened to fine a resident $25 a day until she removes a Christmas wreath with a peace sign that some say is an anti-Iraq war protest or a symbol of Satan.

Kearns ordered the committee to require Jensen to remove the wreath, but members refused after concluding that it was merely a seasonal symbol that didn't say anything. Kearns fired all five committee members.
Wow, he must be a really stable person.

I will never live somewhere with a HA. They can just make up rules as they see fit and try to force you to do things just because they like it that way. Such a crock.

Actually I take that back. There's nothing wrong with them if you choose to belong to one. The catch is that membership should be 100% voluntary. Let all the nazi's have their little club as long as they realize they have no power over the stable people.

The association in this 200-home subdivision 270 miles southwest of Denver has sent a letter to her saying that residents were offended by the sign and the board "will not allow signs, flags etc. that can be considered divisive."

Oh, that evil and divisive concept, peace. At Christmas time no less. WHAT was she thinking?

Yeah, that one got me too.

I think that Kearns needs a little retaliation from the sane members of that HOA.

What a suprise. The media twists the situation in order to make a story.

The subdivision's rules say no signs, billboards or advertising are permitted without the consent of the architectural control committee.

Before purchasing a house, the prospective owners are given the HOA rulebook and are allowed to review them. Seems pretty clear-cut. This is a non-issue.

I'll take that case any day. A wreath is not classifiable as a sign, billboard, or advertisement. It is a decoration. Thanks for playing anyway. That still doesn't address the overall idea of a hoa anyway, which is questionable at best.

It's a sign, billboard or advertisement? Unless they ban all Christmas (er... sorry - "holiday") decorations, there's no good reason to ban this one.

Did you read the next sentence that said the architectural control committee determined the wreath was ok?

Exactly, it's not like it's a "War is not the answer" poster or something else. It's a freaking PEACE symbol.

Wow, homeowners associations sure seem divisive. Maybe they shouldn't be allowed.

Yea me and my wife live in a HOA neighborhood and are looking to get out. Nothing bad has happened but reading what they do at meetings and some of the rules. NO THANKS. And to top it off, you have to pay for this.

That and I thought you ran for HOA board, nope. You have to be nominated to be on the board. And to be nominated it has to be by a current board member. I guess this is how this HOA is set up since this one person fired all of the board that did not agree with him.

Are all HOAs setup like that and are their state rules to them???

For unto us a a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

They better ban the bible too.

Nah, get fertilizer, spread on lawns of those complaining, but spread it in a Pentagram pattern! :D
