I know most colleges out there have some really nice going on with Microsoft where you can get Windows XP Academic edition for like $5.00. Or Office 2k3 for like $5.00. Even Adobe software for like $5.00 (I think).

How much did you pay and what school do you attend? Have you bought the max amount of software you're eligible for?

$0.00. It's free here at Pitt.

EDIT: And it's not "Academic" software, it's plain old volume license as far as I know.

its free for a lot of the ms software, newer stuff is 5$ per cd.

Example, microsoft office is 1 cd, but its a 6 cd set since 5 cds are tutorials and help and other crap, so you have to pay 30.

o i c, so how does that work? Why do some schools charge an arm and a leg, say $199.99 for Windows XP Pro, where as some schools give it either free or for like $5.00 a pop? My school sells Adobe Photoshop CS for $299.99. Not bad though, as it's the full version.

We get most of ours for around $60 or so at K-State. I wish it were free, but that's why I go to Microsoft conferences! ;)

$45 for Windows XP Pro, Office XP or 2003, and pretty much every other piece of MS software except server versions.

for CS Majors:
Everything but Office is free ($199 for office)

For non-CS majors:
Office: $199
XP: $50
(and similar pricing for other apps)

Are academic versions resellable?

as long as there is someone willing to pay for it, who cares?

Because legally that's no different from downloading it off Kazaa?

Edit: My school offered any MS software except Office for free. MSDNAA

The "Academic Version" isn't any different than the normal version, is it?

Here the going rate for M$ software is 1/2 of what retail is. For instance, XP Pro (full version) is $99.99. But of course, most college students either fall into one of two categories from what I have seen. Either they get it when they get their dell (or whatever proprietary heap they get) or they d/l a werez version for the machines they put together themselves. Very few people just go out and buy Windows seperate. The few that do get a decent deal with what is above though. Personally, I'm gonna stick with Gentoo until I can afford to buy even the discounted software...

commoner students here don't get much of a discount, but if you're in computer science & engineering, you get winxp, visual studio and a bunch of other stuff for free because ms donates it.
