is brainwashed to believe that the only way to succeed is through college and people are willing to pay

Glad I didn't go to college. I learn from wiki and other online sources

But the social aspect of college would be cool, but the cost outweigh the benefits

That certainly explains a lot...

I'm not one of the "Everyone must go to college" types...some folks just aren't cut out for it, but SOME kind of education/training post high school SHOULD be mandatory.

Oh great another WebMD.

If by "WebMD," you mean, "Another moron in the internet," then we agree.

Yeah, pretty much. College isn't for everyone, but formal training is, and that includes trades.

Populust? Is that from Wiki?

My brother works for the Post Office. He's a mail carrier. He's been with them for 16 years.

He makes $29 an hour.
Medical/Dental
401k that is matched evenly
Overtime in the summer

He makes nearly $65k a year.

Not bad for someone who didn't attend college or even a trade school.

No wonder the USPS is on the verge of bankruptcy.

If i was a teenager all over again, would skip college and either join the military or go to a technical school. For me, college was a waste of time.

I got 6 years of tuition free as a work 'perk' and finished 2 degrees with $1300 total of college debt.

I think it's all relative though. If you want to practice law or medicine or engineering or whatever technical, it pays to go to a good school. You may have $100-200k of debt starting out, but in the right field and market you'll start way above the average laborer.

Art, music, and all the liberal arts are going to be hit or miss. Film school or music could pay big bucks, for instance, but more than likely you'll be shacking up with your gf or parents until your rich uncle dies.

This discussion was today. I asked him what he made an hour. I thought he was going to tell me $18-19 an hour. When he told me $29 an hour I was blown away.

He is at the top though. I don't see another pay raise unless he went into Administration.

The fact you used But to start and break a sentence tells us you need to read more Wikis.

Sadly lot of jobs want education and not knowledge. The system is broken, but you don't really have a choice but to play it if you want a good job. Of course you may get lucky and find a good gig otherwise, or go self employed, but there's always a risk, if you buy a house and establish yourself and lose that gig, you may have trouble finding another job.

Also I always hear about people complaining that post secondary is so expensive, it's not THAT bad, get a summer job during high school, that will pay for your first year of college + books. If I recall my college tuition was about 2-3k and books about 2k. Wait till you own a house and need to get the perimeter excavated because the basement is leaking. :awe: Or if the states, wait till you get sick. Now THAT is big bucks.

Going into law doesn't mean that you're going to be rich. There are plenty of law majors who are having a difficult time landing a position with a law firm.

I just got done listening to The Millionaire Next Door. The book is nearly 20 years old, but it still makes a lot of sense. The author discussed how the millionaires in his book went right into the work force. Delaying your entry into the workforce can actually work against you.

Yeah. USPS averages $50k, I think. They have the public service exam you have to take to get in, but hire a lot of veterans. When you think about it, a lot of Ex-military that didn't attend college were trained well....

I have a friend who's always thanking god that he made it without a degree, highschool dropout. I don't know his exact job title because I never asked but he makes 35$ an hour and 100$ for emergency calls. He's a supervisor for an on site chemical cleanup crew. They normally clean big equipment stuff at power plants and oil companies. It's not a 9 to 5 job so he gets lots of overtime. Three weeks on and two off I believe. When he's on it's a 16 hour workday. I don't know the exact nature of the job, just that it's along those lines.

Yeah. The point I was making was potential and the difference between choosing a career field that pays and choosing one that doesn't. You can have everything it takes to be successful and bad breath and be unemployable.....just saying. As for law, there are plenty of areas that pay moderate wages when you have minimal experience if you're willing to put in the hours. It's hard to start any career at the top tier pay.

I started college at 18, started full time employment at 19. I won't be a millionaire any time soon, but I'm in the trenches and not too concerned with MY earning potential. I'm enjoying life and cruising so I have more time for family.

Yeah that makes sense. $29/hour for unskilled labor.
UPS/Fedex pay much less than that and they are doing great.

What irritates me is the education inflation. Everyone wants the world for an entry level tech job, but wants to pay slightly more than McDonalds. They want education that absolutely isn't required for the position. All that's needed is simple math skills and common sense. A degree is just another bill to pay so you can prove your worthy of consideration. Never mind it means fuck all for the position applied for.

A few years back, I posted an opening for an administrative assistant position ($13-15 per hour). I got Ph.ds and Masters degree holders applying for that position along with about 150 college grads and 50 non-college.

If I had known more so how important college is, I would have worked harder.

It sets the basis in theories for you to build the rest of your career on. Your career will be applying the ideas that you learned in new ways.

Your GPA from college matters a lot for that first job.

And those college internships and research experiences shape your future career as well.

I just viewed it as that thing you spend 4 years doing because society mandates it, but it actually is a really important developmental time, and one of the few times you have to be surrounded by a peer group of similar age who are excited over knowledge.

WRONG!

Plenty of people are not going to college.

The problem is that those who are, are also willing to get outrageous student loans. That massively increases the cash flow and sure enough, prices skyrocket.

Do you honestly think those fucking books cost 300 dollars?
