So I applied to the University of Illinois School of business and Indiana U this past year...got into both except I wasnt accepted to the school of Business at U of I...but rather wait listed for that....however they let me go in under Liberal Arts and Sciences...which I accepts. I was recently informed that I will not be accepted into the school of business as all the spots have been filled. :( I was told I could re-apply to the School of Business my Junior year if i kept a 3.5 or higher...and id be competing will all transfer students as well as U of I people....and the U of I people have no prescedence (sp?) over non U of I ppl. I think I can swing a 3.5 but I also dont know how tough first 2 yrs can be of college. What other alternatives are there for me....I love working in the business field (ive been doing it the past 2 summers) but I also am realy good with computers (although I dont think I want to go into IT). Any ideas what I can shoot for or try to do?

Farther awa yis generally a good thing if you ask me. College should be far enough from your family that you're not tempted to go home on weekends except for special occasions. It will make you more independant and self-reliant.

Expensive isn't a good thing, though.

But I wouldn't go to a school even if I fell in love with the place, if I couldn't get the degree I wanted.

Local community college and transfer after 2 years? Might save you lot of money and allow you to maintain a good GPA for transfer into business school.

Farther can be a pain in the butt. I go to school a mere 3 hours away, but I only went home for special occasions.

Find another school. Or major in economics and get an MBA? Supposedly business schools prefer econ degrees anyway.

not to belittle you, because this is directed at high schoolers in general, but high schoolers have a very vague idea of what the different fields are all about. they think mechanical engineering means building robots all day, computer science is writing video games, and that business means being a hot shot in a sharp suit on wall street. furthermore, you are assuming that you'll commit to going into business. more likely than not--and this is statistically based--your interest and major will change. when i was in HS, i was infatuated with investing/stocks/trading and i Loved computers. i later found them both EXTREMELY boring and ended up studying rocks. go figure

Transferring isn't that bad if you do it after a year or at the latest, 2 years, since, chances are, you'd be taking intro business courses--not really pertaining to your major. However, that's from my experience--it might be different there.

Very true, if someone told me in HS I would graduate with a Political Science degree I would have thought you were nuts, but now its looks like that is whats going to happen. U of I is a great school in a cool area, you should just do like posted earlier and declare an econ major under LAS and then see if you still like it after 2 years. You never know, you might end up doing something completely different.

maybe it's because your grammar sucks. you know business school is about a lot of networking right? if you can't even speak right, they certainly won't let you in to ruin what little reputation the school already has.

I know how quickly majors in college can change, and theres no telling if my mind will change as well once I get there. I suppose going the economics route might be a better idea because I could at least get a degree more towards the business field...even though, as you said, that can and very likely will change completely

economics is good. then do a dual major with math, or at least a minor. but seriously, take some writing seminars. but the way you write, you probably need some phonetics too.

Take the business courses anyway - you just would have to rely on registering the first day of classes. If you complete the degree requirements the school would be inclined to grant you the degree. Make sure you're in an arts & sciences degree program as well so that the school won't give you grief.

I second the economics recommendation (Bachelor of Science Econ, Univ. of Washington, 2005), it's a good complement to a business curriculum.

My sister is going to Indiana next year and she plans to study business. I realize that cost and distance is a factor, but if you really want to study business you might take it into consideration more seriously.
