Going to U of Illinois in August. In the dorms you can bunk the beds but not Loft them (stupid, i know). Was wondering if it would be better to just get a TV tuner card to watch/record TV thru my computer (also watch DVDS on) or to get a TV and DVD player? I honestly dont watch much TV but i might watch more in college....I still dont know who my roomate is so I cant contact him about it yet. But from your experiences, what is best?>

TV. Your roommate can watch and you'll still be able to do work. We have a 27'' i think, but thats probably a little bigger than average for a college dorm room.

I guess it's gonna be more of an issue to figure out where to put a TV if we brought one...

If you have a ps2 or xbox, jsut bring that. better yet, if your computer has a tv out, plug that in. so no need to buy a dvd player

thats basically what I thought of doing. How exactly does the TV out on video cards work? is that just an S-Video port?

Yeah, you could just run svideo straight to the TV, and them bam.

ah, nice. Might have to consider that. I guess it is just a matter of getting there with all our crap and figuring out a way to set it all up....really sucks they wont let us Loft the beds though

When I started last year, my roommate brought his 13 inch TV, and I purchased a TV Tuner card for myself.

I don't know if this matters to you, but at home I watched TV all the time, but when I went to school, the only time I watched TV was for 24; so don't assume you will watch more, since I thought I would too, and then I kind of just stopped watching it.

Movies are more fun to watch because you can get groups of people together to do it.

Meh..lofts are alright..but..bunking isn't too bad. I remember last year (my first year at college), not all of us had our beds bunked during the first semester..but damn..as soon as the 2nd started..we had all arranged our rooms better because we learned what would work out the best. We all had our beds bunked..and made much better use of our space.

Yeah..I know what the above poster is talking about though. It is strange..at home I watched..well..a good bit of TV. I always knew what was going on in the world..etc..but for some reason it felt like I was not in touch with reality while at college. We rarely watched any news on TV..so if I heard major news it was through the internet. We would often miss the shows we wanted to watch like Lost or..one roommate, the OC. I showed him how to download TV shows and he went apesh!t. We downloaded a lot of our shows.

Maybe he just doesn't know he wants to yet :p

Seriously most guys on our floor had 24" to 32" tvs in their rooms and it seemed to work out well. Get something you wouldn't care too much about if someone vomited on it ;)

I had a craptastic Apex 24" tv for a while and it got the job done.

Moving up to 36" and then 76" sure made my room the movie room though :).

Also a projector wouldn't really be a great idea for studying while you're watching hehe.

You should wait to see who your roomate is. Your roomate might not like watching TV and a huge TV might upset him. It happens. In that case a tv card and headphones would be better.

FIND OUT who your roomate is first and work it out.

Some people do like to study in their rooms IE the harder majors.
