College Tuition Assistance

Here is the deal and I want to see if those that have gone to college more recently than I have any ideas.

My son's girlfriend is trying to get her FABSA submitted, but she can't submit it without her parent's W2 forms.

The gotcha here is that her parents are basically worthless and she lived with her grandmother for sometime until she turned 18. She is now 21 and has been on her own without any support from anyone for 3 years. Her father is basically in and out of prison all the time and her mother is just about as worthless.

However the goverment won't take her paperwork until she has their w2/tax info which I doubt they even have even had.

I feel bad for her. She is a good kid, trying to get into college and not end up like her parents. Is there no way to legally emancipate(sp?) from your parents or anything to do here?

Surely there's a way to get an exception here. You don't always have to have parents income info. Grad students like me don't have to provide parents' W-2's. Have you talked or emailed anyone about this?

My wife is going there Monday to help her, but today was the deadline to insure it was processed before the beginning of the fall semester

The problem is that she should have done this a few months ago. There are forms you can file to indicate that your parents aren't your legal guardians anymore, but I'm unsure as to what they are. I do know they're out there though.

If she's living with her grandmother she may just be able to submit her grandmother's W2.

Eh, those things are usually flexible. I didn't apply until December and got money for both semesters when it came through, so I doubt it's the end of the world. Of course, it may be delayed, which would be a problem.

Grad students are considered independant students. You have to meet one the following criteria otherwise you're a dependant student.

1. The student was born before January 1, 1981.

2. The student is currently married.

3. The student has a child or other dependent(s) who currently receive more than half of their support from the student.

4. The student is enrolled as a graduate or professional student.

5. The student is a qualified veteran of the U.S. military.

6. The student is an orphan or ward of the court, or the student was an orphan or ward of the court until the age of 18.
