College trouble

Any present or former college students ever have to go in front of the IT " Appropiate Use Commitee"....They are cracking down on bandwidth use as well as "piracy" or any traffic patterns deemed "anomolous".A few of my friends have been called to appear next week and....... If you get called you have to show up with the offending machine so they can inspect it ....and there is no way in hell they are touching the lappie or the desktop..

If you have to take the machine, image it beforehand or something, and then wipe the drive. I've never heard of people having to go before some committee for computer use. That's asinine.

OK, I dont understand what you are trying to say, but i have got called on for my laptop to be inspected. Just remember that the only inspection they can do is virus scans and looking over the desktop. They are not allwowd to search though your folders with out consent.

I am not worried all my media files are encrypted , the thing is when I go before them and they look at the hardrive and find out that a good half of my hardrive is encypted using AES/IDEA encryption they will be peeved. They will prolly then ask for the passphrase, then being an ass I while plead the fifth and ........

Heisenberg --Students have to go before the commitee all the time mainly for using to much bandwidth, piracy, weird internet activity...etc. My school pretty much reserves the right to do what ever they want regarding IT. If they look at my laptop/desktop I will be in violation just becasue I have penetration testing tools on my systems which is expressly not allowed. * I did'nt say I used them but the IT handbook states that you may not even have them installed on your system. * I am not worried about that becasue my Math advisor will back me up (hopefully) on why I have legititamte use for them.

I just hate the sunsofbeootchs becasue they have no idea whats going on ..........

oh, do not format your computer. They have proof that things come in and out of your computer (every IP is monitered). If you format, they will suspect something.

By logging on to my schools network you expressly allow them to search your computer for banned software/media

and I quote
" From time to time the ********** will receive notice that a particular computer on our network will be performing Appropriate Use violations, illegal activity, or some other suspicious behavior. The Recording Industry Association of American (RIAA) and the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) often notify The University that a computer on our campus is hosting one or more of its copyrighted materials. It is the University's legal responsibility at that time to block the offending computer and verify that the software and files involved be removed from the computer before unblocking it. This process usually involves a meeting between the owner and the Appropriate Use Committee, and the IT Helpdesk can help arrange this meeting."

Wow, I work for our schools computer department and we are not strict like this at all. I guess its their right.

awww, don't hate

I don't see what the big deal is. Make a ghost image of the drive, clean up the offending media, go before the commitee, ghost over the drive again. All you need is a pile of CDs, a burner and little time.

You should be happy you have time to cover up. Go find some big sites with game demos and streaming media. Then tell them you download alot of game demos. Hopefully they don't look too closely at all the sites you've been to.
