College Transfers

I'm going to be attending Arizona State University in the fall, and I'm looking forward to it. However, at my orientation a month or so ago I started to have second thoughts and doubts about whether or not I made the right choice of school. I started thinking about other possibilities and transferring came up. I realize I haven't given ASU a fair chance yet, and I really hope that I do end up liking it. However if I dislike it there is always the possibility of transferring after 1 year (or possibly 1 semester). I was just curious if anyone on here has ever transferred and could give me any info (good or bad) or advice about it.

I transferred schools twice. It helps if they are in the same state.

Transferring after your first year isn't usually that big of deal, because when you start, you are taking the same basic courses as everyone else. English comp, math classes, etc. to meet general requirements. But I wouldn't transfer after that, because then it really starts to hurt you and you lose credits when they don't transfer properly.

If you think you might transfer, do your best to take classes that you know you will need regardless of the school you attend.

Transferring in the same state definitely does help. I went to school in Florida and transfered to a private college here in Wisconsin after 2 years. I don't know about anyone else but I didn't feel very welcomed because I didn't start at this college. Freshmen seemed to be more welcomed than transfers were. Maybe it was transferring to a different state or maybe it was transferring to a private college or maybe it was transferring after 2 years at another college. I didn't have a good experience but that doesn't mean other's haven't. Good luck in whatever you decide.

Transferred within the same state. You will lose some credits, but it depends on your major, what you are going into and if the school you are transferring has recognition for that area.

For instance, I transferred into a school known for engineering and I did have to take additional courses that they required, but my first school did not. I transferred as a senior, btw, from math into nuclear engineering. I was in a program designed to transfer, so I did not lose that many credits. I only had to go back and take intro eng courses and a few diversity courses. I did have an extremely helpful advisor at the new school.

Thanks for your input guys. I'm looking at transferring out of state, to a better school. From what I've read online thru testimonials and things your first years grades in college become very important. My HS gpa was a 3.9, but that is weighted and some of the schools I'm looking at have slightly hire standards. What can I do my first year to make my transfer application as appealing as possible? Obviously best grades possible, but what else? Join clubs to put on resume?

I transferred schools, not a problem at all. If you're lucky you can get an extra semester or two out of it! ( i just finished this past year) and its not a problem BUT check with the school you are transferring to about what transfers and what doesn't. beleive me, when I heard the news I needed another set of courses my jr year...i was like wtf!?

Can you elaborate? Where did you transfer from/to, and what was your GPA? Any other info? PM me if you don't wanna post it. Much appreciated.

If you're considering transferring and know you have to spend at least a semester at a specific college, then pick your classes based on both what you need at this one and what the next one will require. For example, if you see that english and math will be fine (credit at both places) however a ____1_____ class won't transfer but ______2______ will, pick the second one. If you transfer, you'll have credit for that class, and in the case that you don't transfer, you can do the first one the following semester.

Basically, look into what will transfer and what won't so that it's not a surprise and factor that into class choices.

Yep. Transfered from University of Illinois-Chicago to Northeastern Illinois University. Best decision I ever made...

And yeah, it was incredibly easy, doing it entering my sophomore year. Everything but my awarded credits from my ACT scores transfered, but that wasn't unexpected. Go for it, if necessary, it's very simple.

Transferred of sorts to Texas State University - San Marcos from military. I had several PACE courses, tetsts, and military training credtis, but they only accepted 22 credits total. :| Oh well though. Just means I'll be going to school here for longer. At least it's paid for though.

Sure... I'm in Canada so it probably won't help much, but...

I transfered from a local community college after 7 courses, with a GPA of 3.75. The new institution is the University of Victoria.

To be honest, the best thing you can do is speak with an advisor. They are very very helpful.
