College -- Transfer Student

Okay... I am 20 years old. I just left my school with a pretty bad GPA. I had a lot of family issues, money problems requiring me to work more then attend class... Things like that. I dropped out of that school because I thought the issues were going to continue, and they've taken care of themselves. I don't want to go back to that institution... I was thinking about going to a small community college and getting my associates and then transfering the degree. Anyone have any advice for a transfer student with a bad GPA?

Just so everyone knows I'm not a complete idiot. Sats - In the 1300s, HS GPA - Around 3.5

EDIT: Thanks for the help everyone.

Talk to the admissions people at the school you would like to attend. Explain to them what happened and show them your high school records. They might put you on probation for your first semester/year but it will give you the opportunity to prove yourself.

how bad is it? if it's really bad why don't you just start over without reporting your previous GPA

It's around a 2.0, give or take.

Because I already have like 45 credits, and would mean I've waisted a year and a half.

Transfer it, work your ass off at a new school.

College GPA means nothing unless you have a 4.0 or you're looking to graduate with honors of sorts.

You'll kick yourself in the ass if you lose out on all the time and money spent at another school.

You'd be an idiot not to, but keep in mind you'd be an idiot to make the same mistake twice 😉

College GPA also matters if you want to attend graduate school....

College GPA matters when the engineering job market is in a slump.

College GPA doesn't matter. If it mattered for what he had in mind, he probably wouldn't be asking the question.

You should also consider your choice college's transfer policy. Some will transfer what credits they can and adjust you to current GPA, some will transfer what they can and go by the GPA of those alone, some will transfer it all, find an equal class and match the GPA (oftentimes the classes at the new college are only counted as developmental or pre-admit classes.)

I would take a semester or two at cc and get all As in challenging courses, then apply and explain your deficiencies

I think I will go the community college route... At the very least it is time I dont have to pay back my loans.
