College Talk

Ok, so this is my first year at community college. I am absolutely terrible in math and I am at the point of just taking a W on it and completing it later in a cal state or university. Is this a bad idea? It seems like these community colleges want to keep you there as long as possible to suck every ounce of money out of you before you go to a 4 year. It sucks that my friend going to a cal state got off taking this easy life math where the hardest part was balancing a check book, while I am stuck in community college doing rediculous problems that everyone in the class knows how to do besides me. I know whatever major I take, its not going to be based around math, whether it be politcal science or language arts. What tips can you give me? I am going to talk to the dean and see if he can drop me without a W, but if not I will take the W.

Are there any tutors or math labs available? If you're really struggling, you got math nerds on here. But what kind of math are you struggling with buddy? Taking a W may not be the best idea right off the bat...(you want to save them if necessary). If you fail, you could always retake the course and the grade would be dropped...at least that's how it is at my school (but we can only do it 3 or 4 times)...good luck.

I'd take math at the community college and not in a real school. There are more dumb kids in a community college, so the curve shoudl be lower.

See the problem is, I am in basic algebra man, and I can't even do that. My whole life I have barely made it by in math. No matter how much someone tells me how to correctly go about the problem, it goes in one year and out the other. Every other subject I am a strait A and B student. Most people I have talked to said that taking a W over a D or F is way better.

If you're struggling with basic algebra, you're better off learning this than trying to get around it. Every major I've ever seen requires at least a math equivalency in algebra and if it doesn't, I dont' think the diploma is worth its weight in beans.

Try getting a tutor or working in a study group. Have you taken this before and not done well or is this the first time with algebra? Sometimes people just take longer to work through all the math, it just takes more effort. Don't give up so easily though. If you absolutely have to, take the W and take it again next semester and try the above options as well.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

I took it in middle school and of course in high school. Highest grade I ever got was a D in math. I have tried tutors, but no matter how hard I try I just cannot grasp it.

What part of math do you find hard? Math is pretty logical, so if you can identify when you get thrown off, then you're one step closer to getting better at it.

What you said perfectly describes me. Heres something I recorded when I was playing for about 2 years (I am almost on my 3rd year now)

math is probably easier in community college, unless you can take a math theory class in college.

math theory/history = <3. it's the only reason why my math gen-ed requirement didn't kill my GPA.

Math is WAY easier in CC. At the college I go to you can't use calculators in calc 1 2 or 3!! It never bothered me but I'm sure it's bothered a lot of people.

Never heard of that class, I will have to look into that.
