At my current school they came up with the great idea of putting your ss# on your id card..... I for one do not want the whole world knowing my ss# (considering the places you use it lunch, gym etc.).

Am I being paranoid or what?

your concerns arent unfounded. i mean, originally your ssn was a govt issued number to take care of your social security, now it looks like its being used as a universal id. with the right resources, someone with your social, name and adress could pull some serious stuff. hell, i know of one instance where an ex gf of someone had their personal info and went on an interstate shopping spree

oh, and mine is not

No, it wasn't. In fact, at U of Wisc. - Madison, the old IDs had SS#s and then they were sued by students for being required to give that sort of info publically, so they went to a system of numbers.

When I did my TA work, the prof. wanted to have an ability to catch final exam ringers/id them by having the fathers first name on the exam (must fill in the blank or won't be graded)... when gradeing, we realized that being required to put a student id number (which could have been a SS# in teh old days) and a few collected questions like "mother's maiden name", etc combined with an address from a campus directory would almost be enough to issue credit cards.

Nope, though up here in the Great White North it's called a Social Insurance Number (SIN), not a Social Security Number ;)

Same here. All you are to the university is a nine digit number that makes payments.

Many universities still use the SSN as the student ID. Ball State University does and I have argued against it since I was a freshmen. I'm now staff. ;) Ironically, they (BSU) do have a system in place to use generated numbers but they never stared using it. I guess it will take a few lawsuits to change their mind.

I went to Valparaiso University for one semester before transfering to BSU. VU did not use SSN. They had a 7 digit code generated for each student.

It was, but last semester they changed the system and the SS# is no longer on the student ID.

From what i understand, its derived from your ssn.

Also, look at your student id... the black strip on teh back of teh card is just cosmetic. the real magnetic part is a 3cm wide x 2cm tall chunk inside the card. look for it right under the hologram type thing. if your card is worn down, you can see it easily.
(this is regarding UW id's)
