College students: $250 coupon off $999 system

I figure this is a hot deal, though it apparently has been ongoing and as far as I can see always will. I didn't know about it, so I hope this helps someone else out.

If you go to Dell's Government and Educational department and set up an account as a college student (your school has to be listed) then you get a $250 coupon emailed to your .edu email account, plus a link to the Dell Permier site where you get an additional 3-12% off, depending on the cost of the system. $1600 and up systems are 12% off, 8% for $800-1600 systems.

Here's the kicker: you get certain percentages off XPS systems too.

You don't think the deal I posted in tohe OP is hot? It's not a bare budget system price but look at the specs! That would be a nice gaming laptop if you could get something better than the 8400M GS in it. The home and office 1520 has the 8600M GT as an option, you may be able to call and get this deal with that GPU.

i was just saying that having to spend $1000 to get the $250 off makes the deal not that hot.

but, there's quite a bit there that could be taken off to shave the price down. like you said, would need an 8600 to be a good gaming system, and that adds close to another $200.

Yes it does, it's something like 30 days from when you get it. It may be possible to get another one if you don't use that one, I'm not sure. I can't imagine why they wouldn't give you another.

I just went through customizing the 1520 again and now the 8600M GT is an option. It comes to around $1590 with it and all the same options as I had in the OP.

I've been messing around with it some more, and it does not work on XPSes, though you do get the 12% off $1600 XPSes and 6 or 8% off $800-1600 XPSes.

The 1520 does have the 256MB 8600M GT as an option (as comparison, it outperforms the GeForce 7700 which is the best DX9 GPU for 15.4" laptops). Sometimes if you click the 1520 it takes you to the page to customize a 1420 which doesn't have it, weird. Just pay attention to where you are.

This deal is best for the cases I have in the OP, where you need a powerful Inspiron. It turns out a few hundred cheaper than Dell Home.

And no, the coupon is only for Inspiron laptops - not desktops or accessories.
