College student recipes?

Anyone know of a good place with recipes that even someone like me, whose most complicated dish are eggs.. can follow? I mean I can follow directions, measure things and all that, but if it gets any more advanced I'm not confident I can follow through on it without burning our kitchen down..

Healthy eating is also a big plus.

And ooh, anything supplementing our George Foreman grill would be a big plus.
 
AllRecipes has always been a good site for me. Good range of complication, and you can sort by ingredient or cooking style or whatever. Look up the type of meat you want and then by cooking method - grilling, and you should find some good recipes for your Foreman grill.
 
cup of noodle + water + microwaave. Just kidding. I'm a college student as well and I'd like to know some simple recipes.
 
I would also like some simple foods to do. I have access to a small stove but mainly use a microwave.
 
Buy a cook book.
The ones that have a guide to cooking in the front. Explaining all the terminology, and how to go about it.

I believe the original Betty Crocker cook book had a great guide in it. Still 100% useful today.

pita to find the original betty crocker cookbook, or even a modern revision of it. they fractioned it into different books to charge more money, and even all of them together dont add up to the original.

luckily, we were able to find something VERY close to the original. 🙂
 
start with hamburger helper.. then move up to reynolds oven bags and such.. they all the receipes and turn out pretty good
 
Lloyd's makes some decent barbeque shredded chicken/pork/beef that just comes in a microwaveable container.
 
Go buy some Lawry's 30 Minute Marinade from the supermarket. There at least a half dozen flavors to choose from, they are pretty good. Try the jerk sauce with papaya juice first. Get some chicken from the meat section, chicken legs are good, or thighs, doesn't matter. It's really cheap too, around five bucks for fifteen legs, and similar price for thighs.

Remove the skin from the legs, poke about 8-10 holes into each piece of chicken for the marinade to seep in even better, put them all into a big bowl or a pot if you don't have any bowls large enough. Another option is to get really big ziplock baggies and that works even better. Pour the marinade in with the chicken, making sure to coat each piece. Cover and put in the fridge over night. If you are in a hurry you can just let it sit for an hour. Transfer into a pyrex or some other oven safe container, and make sure you put the marinade in with it. Pour a little capful of olive oil or vegetable oil over each piece (this will help give an appealing brown color, if you don't they will come out very pale and unappetizing, but the flavor will be the same). Preheat the oven at 400 degrees for about 5 minutes. Put the chicken in, and an hour later your chicken is cooked.

Eat this with rice, or spaghetti. I don't eat much carbs so I eat this with vegetables like steamed broccoli (my rice cooker has a steaming attachement). If you want good rice to go with it, get something similar to ricearoni, they are easy to make and taste pretty good.
 
my daughter's boyfriend's mom and I took turns teaching the kids (the 2 of them and the respective younger brothers.. 16, 17, 19, 20, and occasional hangers-on) to cook this summer.. once a week we had cooking lessons, and when it was time for school to start I typed up the recipes for everything they'd cooked here, and the rest of her favorite foods, and made them cookbooks. if you're into southern comfort-food type cookin' (heavy on the casserole), pm me your e-mail address, I'll send you the file.

 
I saw somewhere dozens of variations on ramen noodles... mixing it with all sorts of other things...

.... Ground beef isn't expensive dude. We've got 500lbs of it sitting in a chest freezer. Buy cheap, buy en masse, and store.

what on earth is a college student gonna do with 500 lbs of ground beef?? a family of 4 couldn't go through 500 lbs of ground beef in a year, even if they ate nothing else.. and I'm sure you're not supposed to keep stuff that long..

geez.. 500 lbs.. I can't even imagine! that's like.. 8 years worth.. or.. more..

chicken is cheaper!

 
i'm so friggin lazy, i used to cook in huge bulks on the weekends. just divide them into daily portions and freeze 'em up.

lunch/dinner = mr microwave
 
This is an easy recipe, feeds a bunch and is inexpensive:

2-3 potatoes, scrubbed and sliced (you dont have to peel them)
1 lb. ground pork or beef
1 yellow onion, sliced
1 lb. green beans, peas or any veggie of your choice
1 can crushed or stewed tomatoes
salt & pepper to taste

Place sliced potatoes in greased baking dish or heavy bottomed pot w/lid. Crumble in the ground meat, season with salt & pepper and top with remaining ingredients in order given. Cover with lid. Bake at 450 for 1 hour, or 325 for 4 hours, or 250 if gone all day.

If you buy a Crockpot, you can make all kinds of inexpensive, healthy dishes.
 
Is "Home Economics" still taught in JHS/HS?
I have long maintained that males be encouraged to take a class in how to boil an egg, sew a button on a shirt and do their laundry.
Similarly, females should take a class in how to check the oil level in a car, hang a picture on a wall and so on.

😉 Oh yeah, girls should also be taught to speak fluent "football", and how to quickly retrieve a cold one from the kitchen. 😉
 
*tries to post something useful*

easy - cook a chicken breast on the george foreman grill. if it was frozen, after it's been in there about ten mins, flip it over and scrape off some of the gooey white stuff on it..

get an onion. slice it in half. put one half away. the other half, slice into smaller slices. separate the pieces.

heat up a skillet/wok/whatever. put in some oil (just pour enough, maybe a tablespoon or so). throw in the onions. let them simmer a few mins, and start swishing them around the pan.

add half a container of sliced mushrooms (at ralphs you can buy a pack of sliced mushrooms for 1.99.) throw them in the mix, and let them saute together.

take the chicken out of the grill, and slice it up. throw it into the pot.

you can also add bell peppers if you'd like. just slice into small pieces and throw it in also. cook mushrooms and onions until tender. add pepper and soy sauce for taste. serve with rice. serves two people.

EASY - hot dog fried rice. if you want peas and carrots, heat in a microwave safe container for a minute (add some water so it doesn't burn, but just a little.) heat up the skillet. crack an egg in and let that start to cook. (always remember to grease the pan first.)

get some hot dogs and slice them up. throw in the pan with the egg. cook everything together. (break the egg up like you're scrambling it.)

add the peas and carrots. if there is still water left, try to drain it out. first. throw into the pan.

add your rice. for best results, use day old rice as it's a little drier. mix everything together, add pepper and salt for taste, and then soy sauce.
 
American Chop Suey

cook 1/2 cup dry macaroni
drain
set aside


Brown 1 pound ground beef
if you bought the cheap stuff, tilt the pan and spoon out the grease when nearly finished

Mix cooked macaroni and ground beef

add marinara sauce (you can use regular pasta sauce too, it's a tad more watery).
Salt & pepper to taste.


Elapsed time: roughly 20 minutes
2-3 dishes required
stores for several days.
filling.
acceptable for breakfast, even if you're not hung over.
