I am currently contemplating the following three major combinations:

1) CPA Accounting + Information Systems
2) Finance and Information Systems
3) Finance and Computer Science

My dilemma comes here: Ever since I was little, I have had a strong interest and background in software development and technology in general. I really enjoy playing with the latest gadgets, assembling my own pcs, and reading up on the latest tech news. I do have a solid background in CS as I've already taken 4 CS courses in college and I do have good skills in programming.

But my problem comes here: I come from a fairly high ranked university, so I don't forsee any issues landing the initial job out of college. I already have an internship developing websites using php scripts and maintaining databases.

But my biggest concern is what happens 10,15 years out to a career in IT. How real are the threats of ageism ? Outsourcing? Are they things I should be worried about or are they way overblown myths?

This is why I've recently considered majoring in either Finance or Accounting. I am certainly interested in finance but my interest in accounting is more questionable since it is quite monotonous. I can envision myself dealing with tax since it requires some more problem solving and creativity but auditing seems pretty boring. Can any working accountants shed light on how they feel about their current careers? Also, how much of a outgoing and social personality does one need to have to work in accounting? I tend to be more introverted and reserved.

Essentially, this dilemma boils down to following my true passion or what is more practical. If any professionals or fellow AT'ers can provide some guidiance, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Always follow your true passion. You can retrain if needed later or work part-time elsewhere for the cash, but ending up full-time in a place/career you don't care about is not desirable.

No one can tell how the IT field (or any other for that matter) will look in 10-15 years. Do what makes you happy or develop a skill that will make you your own boss.

edit: change your avatar until you have a few hundred posts.

Accounting is one boring major. More boring than the most boring engineering class. You'll die when you take Accounting information systems (do not be fooled by the name). That said, all that pain in suffering leads to probably the best job security.

I wouldn't double major Computer Science with finance. Seems kind of silly to me. And I don't know many jobs that will require a finance degree with either information systems and/or computer science. And I don't know any accounting jobs that will require information systems knowledge. I consider Information Systems as Computer Science light, I'd either go with that or a finance/accounting combo.

Oh, and do your basics first. You do NOT want to have major classes taken then a few years down the road you decide you want to change it.

are you kidding me? doing those combos = good consulting gig. You have no idea how mismanaged companies can be. These consultants come in, fuck shit up even more, then end up improving business process by only 10% (when in reailty, they could have hired a company like accenture to do it right the first time) .

Ok yeah I'll give you the consulting firm choice. I just can't see the correlation between information systems/finance/accounting/ and computer science. Maybe it's just me...

*shrug*

Oh, and I know many people whom work for accenture and they are all dumb asses (not saying the company as a whole, just those who I know). Hell I dated a girl whom worked at accenture and she was about as smart as a jar of mayonnaise.

As a finance major i know what you're going through. For sure go for accounting and if you can double major in finance. You will have much easier time finding a job with accounting degree then you will if you just get finance degree.
