Bush was stumped during the Q&A session of his speech today by a sophomore at Kansas State.

Q: My name is Tiffany Cooper. I?m a sophomore here at Kansas State and I was just wanting to get your comments about education. Recently 12.7 billion dollars was cut from education. I was just wondering how is that supposed to help our futures?

[snip]

Bush: Actually, I think what we did was reform the student loan program. We are not cutting money out of it.

Tiffany clearly confused Bush. Not only did he have to turn to his aide for advice, but he confused truthiness with the truth. The facts:

Student Loans: On Dec. 21, 2005, the Senate passed $12.7 billion in cuts to education programs ? ?the largest cut in student college loan programs in history.? Vice President Cheney cast the deciding vote in favor of the cuts. The bill also fixed the interest rate on student loans at 6.8 percent, ?even if commercial rates are lower.? Despite Bush?s claims, students will be left off the program.

Pell Grants: Pell Grants have been frozen or cut since 2002; they are now stuck at a maximum of $4,050. In his 2000 election campaign, President Bush promised to increase the maximum Pell Grant amount to $5,100. ?From 2004 to 2005, 24,000 students lost their Pell grants, according to a report pre-pared by the Congressional Research Service. This was the first drop in the number of students receiving the grants in several years; the number had been growing steadily since 1999.?

Poor Tiffany, she will be put on "No access list", then will get monitored by the NSA. Oh, and No-Fly list too.

Soon after, she will get an IRS audit. Then some will ask "Why does Tiffany hate America so much?"

This will, for sure, justify the NSA spying on her.

what an asswipe. If you're gonna cut student funding, at least have the balls to face students.

How can people respect this man?

You failed to mention the Iraqui women that Bush asked to shut up. She was thanking him for the freedom she and her family now has. He requested that she either ask a question or quit talking. Funny you didn't Cliff note that. He answered questions for 45 minutes to an hour and was only stumped once? Could you actually do as well?

Maybe if more students actually paid back their loans, the budget wouldn't have been cut. Responses only from past students who have actually paid back their loans in full please!

Woot..censored questions! Let us make sure we can curb difficult questions for our every fragile leader! We must make sure we are not seen as weak in the face of Terrar!! High school sophmores who our legislation effects do not understand! And since Tiffance questions it, she must be one of the few who will not pay back her loans!

Don't ya worry though..if they don't go to university they can work at the local Ford or GM plant...oh wait...no..not that doesn't work..we are still waiting for the outsourced jobs to help us here...hmmm...in the meantime she can go on Welfare? I suppose that would cost less than the studen loans it would have taken her to go to school huh....

Next time you write a check to your plumber or carpenter, remember those words of yours. I doubt that either of them will have completed a MBA or even a BA and yet you just paid them more per hour than you can earn. Unless, of course, you are Bill Gates (dropout) or Henry Ford (no degree). It isn't what you know in this world that counts, but what you do. Besides that, would you compare your GPA to that of Bush? Maybe, but maybe not. Those that have (John Kerry comes to mind) were proven second best. Pedantic dialog does not represent ability for anything but pedantic dialog! Having paid for three university educations and having only earned an associates degree myself, I do believe that the level of the academic achievement is not the only, nor is it the best measure of professional ability. Of the three degrees I financed, not a one of them is working in the area of study. The credits that I have accumulated from institutions of higher learning were the easiest to achieve. They should have been the most difficult!

Now you tell me, why is Bush such a lying, snivelling little worm? Doesn't he have the the balls to get up there and defend his policies?

He had just done that for 45 minutes to an hour before that question was raised. You didn't watch, did you? If you had, you could have posted something factual.

Oh, have you paid back your loan?

Condor, I didn't realize you had to pay back Pell Grants.

EDIT: Also, student loans cannot be acquired through other means than the Federal government? Why would one take out a loan from the federal government if the interest rate is going to be higher?

I don't remember asking anyone if they had paid back their Pell grant. When I did go to university, it was at the age of 33 and I worked full time while attending at night. You won't find a lot of sympathy here. I did get VA benefits while I attended. You can get those too.

Blah blah blah. He wasn't stumped for 45 minutes! Oh goodie for him. :cookie: You do realize this is supposed to be our PRESIDENT and he should at least know what his policies are and have done. To be stumped by this truly does show his bumbling buffoon mental capacity. I know all presidents are coached and have learned speeches but jeez, at least learn what your policies are!!!!

edited for spelling....

Condor, are you saying that Gates and Ford are the rule and not the exceptions? You give two examples of people that have succeeded while completely disregarding the hundreds of thousands if not millions that have gone in the polar opposite direction. There's intellectual integrity at it's best for ya.

These loans and grants are there for a reason. To give the majority of Americans who could not go, let alone pay for college, the opportunity to excel by getting the education required to keep this country at the forefront of the world economy. Cutting this program while pork spending out the yang is one of the most shameful things that the Repugs have done in their decade of horror in control. It shows that their concerns are clearly for their campaign chests or their own pockets and not what is clearly in the best interest of this country which is having the most educated work force on the planet.

Remember, "party over country"

America could burn, but as long as the GOP survives with it's wealth and power, that's A-OK

Everyone forgot to mention that he also told the girl in question that he was unsure about the exact numbers, and that he would look into it. When he admits that he is wrong, nobody on this forums wants to hear it.

Last I checked, he (Bush) is managing two wars, and the biggest budget in the history of mankind. I am not surprised that he has something better to do than memorize facts and figures regarding student loans that the odds show are NOT getting paid back anyways. He WAS certain that the PELL grant program was not affected. PELL are for poor people. The rest of us can WORK and PAY our way through college. I worked three jobs to get through. It took 5 years to finish.

Typical. 99% didn't watch one minute of the Q&A session being discussed.

Let's not even mention the Iraqi thanking Bush for liberating her people. Let's instead try yet another lame "Bush is stupid" attack.

Yeah, I'm sure he did just that (right after he had the goons whisk the traitorous biotch away)

Last I checked, he (Bush) is managing two wars, and the biggest budget in the history of mankind.

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!! He has to try to walk and chew gum at the same time? POOR BABY!

(on second thought, maybe you're right--he does have a penchant for injuring himself with bicycles and pretzels...maybe not a good idea for him to have too much on his plate at the same time)

I am not surprised that he has something better to do than memorize facts and figures regarding student loans that the odds show are NOT getting paid back anyways.

Oh, of course...everyone who takes out loans are lowlife scum

He WAS certain that the PELL grant program was not affected. PELL are for poor people.

ICK! Poor people! Can't have none of those people dirtying up the halls of higher learning. Bad enough they exist in society out in the open!

The rest of us can WORK and PAY our way through college. I worked three jobs to get through. It took 5 years to finish.

How can a student *not* pay back student loans? You can do two things to not pay them back.

1. Become a street bumb.

2. Die.

Otherwise they will ALWAYS follow you. You can go into temp deferment and extend the term for 2x the amount but you will ALWAYS pay them back. You cannot default your way out of federal loans. Now you can't even default your way out of private loans. You can have cancellations but only for the below reasons.

  • Total disability
  • Death of the member
  • Member of armed services
  • Certain full time teachers, nurse, medical tech, law enforcement, correction officer
  • Certain professions working with disabled, or low-income high-risk children and their families
  • Certain staff and volunteers for Head Start VISTA, or Peace Corp

These exceptions are rare compared to the number of people in fed loan programs.

Before you start blathering on about things you don't know, perhaps you should take a look at the securitized pool performance of government student loans. I have because I work in securitization.

As far as Pell grants go, people NEED them. You might not have but some do. Applying EVERYBODY's situation to you is self-centered and stupid.

We can spend 200billion in a war based upon false pretenses, lies, and stupidity, but we can't spend 12.7billion to make sure our people have a future beyond SUV's.

Great job righties, keep it up!

Oh, have you paid back your loan?

Yes, a rather large lump sum paid a few days after I got a letter asking me for my first payment.

Now lets get back on topic, so you can help me understand Bush..
Are you saying he's so stupid that he can't answer a few questions about his policies without forgetting what they are? Or is that he isn't aware of what he is signing into law to begin with? Or is it that he's a lying coward who cuts funding one day, then tells a student the next day that he didn't cut anything?

Wow, how did she get past the screeners?

There goes her GPA and the jobs of a few screeners.
