Hey y'all!
A couple months ago I had a college rig plan get scrutinized here and the final outcome was decided upon ($1500 budget - ordering from oxfordpc.com)
Well the bad news is: my dad can't afford to give me $1500 right now cuz he's been putting in a lot into my college etc
The good news is: we've talked it over and the solution was he gives me $1000 right now and I can do whatever I want with it. Get an ultra-value rig tomorrow or save up and get an über l337 rig.
So the original plan was as follows:
SYSTEM SUMMARY
CPU: AMD Athlon XP 1900+ 1.6 GHz OEM
CPU Cooler: Thermalright AX-7 (heatsink only)
CPU Fan: Thermaltake Smart Case Fan 80MM
Motherboard: Epox EP-8KHAL (no raid)
Memory: Mushkin 512MB PC2100 DDR (1 DIMM)
Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar Special Edition 80GB
CD-RW Drive: LiteOn LTR-32125W 32x12x40x CDRW
Keyboard: Logitech Elite Keyboard
Mouse: Logitech MouseMan Dual Optical
Video Card: Gainward GeForce4 Ti 4200 64MB DDR
Sound Card: Creative Sound Blaster Audigy OEM
Speakers: Logitech Z-540
Network: Linksys EtherFast 10/100
Monitor: Samsung SyncMaster 950B 19"
Case: Chieftec Green Aluminum Case w/ Acrylic Window & 420W PS
Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Professional (legit...w00t!)
Warranty: Lifetime Phone & Email Support - 3 Years Labor - 1 Year Parts
Assembly: Assembly, Benchmarks, 72 Hour Burn-in, and Software Installation
OPTIONAL COMPONENTS
ATA133 Rounded Cable Set (White) - $30
Logitech QuickCam Express - $45
HP Deskjet HP845C - $85
This would have totalled around $1700 tops with s&h.
Now that I have a green light to spend as much as I want (altho the überer it gets, the longer I'll have to wait for it) I'm thinking of improving it a tad.
- I really wanted a KT333 mobo but due to budget got KT266A (cuz i wouldn't use faster than PC2100 ram anyways) - now I'm prolly gonna get Epox 8K3A. I still don't need the onboard raid so no need for the + version.
- Instead of 512mb PC2100 I've decided to get 512mb of high-performance CAS2 PC2700. (no need for PC3200 yet I don't think)
- With the release of the new AthlonXPs, and likely price cuts, I can probably afford a faster processor, although the performance gain will be minimal. I'd really like a revisionB 2200+ but I think that's pushing it too far...maybe a 2000+ or 2100+ tops.
- In the graphics department I'd like an ATI card to take advantage of upcoming price cuts due to the new line of cards but a geforce4 ti4200 seems like the best value. Although I've been considering gettin a lesser card (ATI Rage128 ballpark) so that I can have a work system whilst I save up extra to get a Radeon 9700Pro... thoughts? This will also ensure that I work more and play less at first!
- Sound is ok I think, no point in X-Gamer Audigy as it only includes bundles games that I'm not interested in. Speakers are all good for a college dorm I reckon.
- I could definitely use a DVD drive and this will be a welcome bonus! So I'm lookin at around $2000 I think...
any thoughts/comments/suggestions?
thx for any feedback!
