Such broad rankings are essentially useless to an individual. If you were looking for an elite School of Public Health you wouldn't bother with Berkeley, UVA, or UCLA. Ann Arbor is decent but UNC is head of the class with Hopkins and Harvard. Analytical/Inorganic chemistry is also a Chapel Hill gem. Berkeley and Ann Arbor certainly have more elite doctoral programs than others but unless you plan to get more than one PhD . . . who cares?!

Another issue is that there are plenty of "elite" programs that bite. You get the wrong advisor/PI, decide you hate the city, decide you hate your peers . . . rankings are useful to get a general idea about programs. But you would be better served by investing time into contacting graduate students at these programs and visiting to see what they are really like.

Pfft. What do you care what he thinks? Grow a thicker skin. Last I checked, OPINIONS weren't outlawed. Well, maybe at Berkeley if they don't agree with the ultra-liberal. :D

For public schools I'd say the rankings are pretty fair, but overall (including private schools) Berkeley should be higher than #20 but I don't feel they are #1.

I go to the school tied for #12 overall

If you're going for your doctorate, then the people in your field know which schools are good for what, so it doesn't really matter where it's ranked.

If it's just a BS/BA thing, well, school name recognition matters in the region that it's located. I have a degree from UCD and it goes a long way here in California, but when I went out east, people don't know about the UC school system, so I have to tell them "well, there's UCB (Cal), UCLA, UCSF, UCSD, UCD, UCI,....."

Of course, if you go to a school for a chump major, it renders everything invalid :)

these rankings are far too broad to be meaningful. and the undergrad ones are there only to reaffirm the public notion that harvard, princeton, and yale are the 3 best schools in the country.
