So due to some unforseen events this term I haven't done as well as I hoped in one of my classes, I was thinking about dropping it. But can I do that this close to the end of the term? The final for this class is on Tuesday, I am pretty sure I will get a D if not fail this class.

if I drop this class it will take me below full time status down to 12 credits, should I still do it?

At my school, you can drop a class without it going on your transcript in the first 3 weeks of the quarter. After that, you have until the time that the final is passed out to withdraw from the class, but at that point, it goes on your transcript as being withdrawn.

It varies from university to university. Here, you can only drop within the first 2 weeks without a W, up until a month and half before the end of the semester with a W, and up to 2 weeks before with a WP/WF.

I think if I withdraw from the class now it will go down as a withdrawn class on my transcript, is that bad? I am applying to the University for Winter, will it look bad if I have that?

One or two aren't usually detrimental, but more than that and people start to ask questions about why you have dropped so many.

It would probably be better to withdraw then to take an D/F or a no pass then right?

Depends on the make-up policy. Some universities allow you to retake a class and replace the failing grade a certain amount of times.

Thats what mine allows, well your first grade goes on there and then there is an R and then they can look up the retake grade.

If they can still look up the grade, it would better to withdraw and retake.

I'm going to talk to the instructor and a advisor today and see what they say on what would be the best approach.

Thanks for all of the advice. :)

Just go ahead and finish out the class. You never know how cool or generous your professor may be in the end if you go talk w/ them on a personal level. Even if you get a D or F, just retake it and I bet that grade will be replaced so your future GPA will not be jeopardized. Most colleges let you replace grades for retaking a class.

I plan to talk with them, but wouldn't dropping it without taking the D or F and retaking it be better then having that D or F factor into my GPA?

At rutgers, it is better to get an F or a withdraw rather then a D. The first 3 F's or W's can be completely replaced if you retake the course and do not effect your GPA. I got an F in a course, retook it, got an A and my GPA raised by like .5. However, If you get a D you can retake the course if you wish, but they will average the two grades together for your GPA. So if you get a D and then an A, you end up with like a C+ or something lame like that.

It doesnt make any sense at all, but not much at Rutgers does.

I will never accept a D, I'll either complain till I get a C or drop it and retake the course.
