College question

I'm just finishing up with all of my college stuff, and today I get a mailing from Arizona state university. I've gotten a few of these before, but this one makes a pretty concrete financial offer. it's giving me the chance to take an 80k 4 year scholarship with housing in the honors dorm.

The only thing is, I'm wondering about how good of a school it is (if you want to know my test scores etc, I'll pm them) and if it's worth spending four years there as opposed to spending a fair amount of money and going somewhere like johns hopkins.

Did anyone go to this school or know someone that did? I've heard that it was a great school, but only from alumni and school officials, so it's all pretty biased.

By the way, I'm this clueless about this school because I'm from Chicago, which is not exactly next door.

What are you aspirations? Do you know what you want to major in? Most undergrads are pretty equivalent within the same major. There are small differences ( I transfered from Georgia Tech to the U of Montana. Physics at Georgia Tech was way harder than University of Montana, but UM Chem is much more difficult than the GT chem I took.)

From what I know ASU is not a top tier school. I dont think the quality of education matters as muc has the mind set of students on campus and the people you end up networking with in the future. THe people you meet at Johns Hopkins are more likely to be driven and have a better chance at being successful. Of course you'll meet people like this at ASU but i think the over quality is less. If money is a big issue for you then the scholarship definitely sounds good, but if it's not a big deal i would go to JH

Highly dependent on what major you want to do.

The honor dorm thing is not a big incentive.

Also, how much are out of state fees for arizona?

If it comes down to ASU versus an expensive private school, then I'd go with ASU. Having been to both a state school (UGA) and a private school (Emory) I suggest that you'll probably still get a good education at ASU while enjoying the experience much more as well.

Depends on your plans. As far as straight-up academics are concerned, your particular undergraduate college doesn't matter a whole lot as long as you do well there... most undergrad curriculums are reasonably standardized. Its a matter of whether or not you'd like to get in on some research while an undergrad (higher-tier schools will give you more opportunity), what kind of financial aid package private schools are willing to supply you with, and where you'll feel most comfortable going to school for the next 4 years in general.

Ron Jeremy went to Queens College and became a porn star... it really doesn't matter as long as you get that piece of paper thingy at the end of 4 years...
