update: i have purchased a D-LINK DI-704P. This is a Broadband router with built in print server. How should this work? Will i need to turn on/off anyhting on the router? And are most resnets static or dynamic IPs, because it will need to know that.

Just any advice on setting this up once i arrive on campus?

for just 2 computers you wouldnt need a print server but since you have one i guess this is a pointless post

its a print server because we have 3 PC's hooked up to it, and it was cheap anyways. Plus i may want a print server later...like in an apartment.

Most colleges use dynamic IP addresses that will only change when your computer/router is turned off for a long time. The only things I can think you might need to change is port forwarding settings. If you run any apps/servers that require open ports you will need to tell the router to send them to your computer. There may be some settings for your print server too, but I have never used one. Just play around with everything, if you screw something up the manual will tell you how to reset the router to default.

Also, be sure to change the routers username and PWD from default.
