i go to Buffalo State College, and the network wont even assign anything an ip address unless its registered, so i had to throw another NIC into my pc and run some ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) to get my xbox online. so it connects to the internet, but not xbox live...

a lot of things are blocked...pretty much all the P2P filesharing programs and online games...but xbox live? come on....

anything i can do?

EDIT: oh yeah...for some reason, there are 2 ports that this kid found that arent blocked...so you could use anythign over them (i used dc++ over them and it works fine)...didnt see any options on my box to use specific ports though...

Maybe they blocked a range of ports but they're not aware Xbox Live is using those? I've never heard of a college that blocks gaming ports. Weird. And, no, bribing network admins won't work. Remember, they're nerds/geeks.

Buy a couple of Cantennas and give one to the guy across the street who has cable and bribe him to point it at your window (after he connects it to his network).

Or you could get a router and figure out how to connect your Xbox to the network through the router and then turn on port forwarding on the router to redirect the traffic on UDP 88, UDP 3074, and TCP 3074 to the ports that are not blocked. That might work?

This wouldn't work, the ports are being blocked further downstream from the xbox, adding a router in his room doesn't get around this.

I was under the impression that port forwarding would take the ports used by the Xbox and reroute them to a destination IP address (his gateway) on the port that he specifies (the ones which can do anything which his buddy found). If that isn't correct, could you explain how it would work?

You don't seem to get that the blocking is being done from a large firewall downstream from the router. He can't get around that. It will block all attempts to contact the router.

In addition, most colleges don't like people using routers. They will find out if you have one or not in a short amount of time and come down on you hard.

I know at the University that I attend/work IT at, XBox live isn't necessarily blocked, but due to the high traffic caused by other dorm patrons (not to mention the capped, packet prioritizing connection) causes game connections to stall and not connect. The only time I get to DoD on Steam is on the weekends that we don't have a football game, in which every one vacates the campus.

 can do a great many things, but be careful. If you choose the wrong , you may find yourself with even less access. So get an idea of what the admins like before you drop off the keg.

Simply ask them..... I used to work for the University at Buffalo, and we actually made sure that xbox live and other consoles wouldnt have a problem connecting.

If you are having the problem, that means other students are also. Gather the masses and start to protest in front of the IT department and demand that the Xbox and PS2 be allowed to connect to play online.

if that doesnt work start a riot and destroy everything.

It would be really fun to watch the 10 o'clock news while police officer start throwing gas and rubber pelets at you guys.

I like that option a LOT better than beer. :D

Shoot some pictures and shift the table around, now instead of bribe, you can BLACKMAIL.

Sure it will work, Use your PC to dialup to the internet and share the connection on a router/switch.

Register your Xbox on the network. my school allows people to register PS2s and Xbox onto the network. We are using the Campus manager register machines to the network. I'd suggest just having a talk with someone over at your Computing Services Administration, IT or whatever its called at your school.

Yeah..with managed switches, assuming they use them, they should be able to allow just your jack if they are of the paranoid security type.
