college money....confused

Foundation

Senior member
I got the money letter from UF yesterday and it states that I will be getting $1,600 (800x2) in loans (per semester I suppose) and the rest will be paid by grants........

the total cost to attend UF is 12,000 per year and everything is paid for except the 800x2 loans. Is this a good package?

Let me get this straight - they are giving you grants for 87% of your college tuition with the rest in loans, making your actual cost today zero, and you're asking if it's a good package?

<< better than what i'm paying. $50 a credit hour. no financial aid, cause my mom never filled out a FAFSA >>

Ouch. Should have filled out the FAFSA yourself. That is what I did.

anyone know if living on your own helps or hurts with financial aid? me and my g/f live together....and i plan on going to school sometime here, i'm 18.66 years old, give or take.

uh, i'm still a minor....can you do that?

BingBong, living by yourself will help you just going to have to prove that your not dependent on your parents, assuming you don't make alot of money, and since you work at MCD's if I not mistaken, your not making alot of money.

correct, i'm workin at McD's 😎 😛

i guess worst case scenario, i'd have to loan a large part of the $$$, and thats no biggie 🙂

Borrowing money for school is a good Idea only if you finish school, don't pull a me, hopefully get my BA next spring after about 16 years of fits and starts

Don't know... Didn't think of that. Even so, to make sure it gets done fill it out and have your mom sign it if that is required.

I don't know if I'd want to take on $3200 of debt per year. That's just me, though. If you can pay it off, then there should be no problem.

3200x4= 12800, thats not that much Money considering what your getting esp when you consider alot of new cars will $20000+ and you education will last longer than a car. My point just make sure you want to got to school, if you really want to do it then borrow the money if you have too, just finish it. Half a college, isn't worth as much as pay for but a degree is worth every dime.

I interpreted the post to mean $1600 per year, not per semester. Making the total $6,400 for a four-year college degree. Summer jobs could pay that off, let alone working part-time during school!

yeah, its $1,600 per YEAR

$800 per sem

FAFSA is something you should learn to do on your own. It's not difficult, just need you parent's tax document and your own and follow the instruction. The only thing you might need your parent for is to sign it.

Yep, you sure can. I filled out my FAFSA (I was 17 when I did it). But that didn't help me any - I'm a dependent, and we're getting basically ZERO from the gov't for my college.

Ho-hum.

don't worry -- my husband started college almost 30 years ago and will hopefully finish this fall! :Q 🙂

First of all.. Foundation, that is one helluva good package by my standard. I am assuming that $12k a year is including living and expenses (since you said total cost of attending, not total cost of tuition). You're pretty lucky to have only $1,600 a year loan considering a lot of people I know had almost 100% in loans. Is that $1,600 a year loan subsidized or unsubsidized? If subsidized, take it.. you got nothing to lose on that loan. If you don't use up that loan amount let it sit in your bank account and accrue interest or save it for a rainy day.

Secondly, PsychoAndy.. how old are you? It doesn't take that much to fill out the FAFSA form. I started college early (16.5 years old) and I had to fill out the FAFSA form myself and had my parents signed it. Btw, you can now fill out your FAFSA form online.. back in our days, we had to fill it out by hands! Just drag your parent into your room for a moment and sit them thru filling out the form.
