College grading systems

What do you guys think? Better to have +'s and -'s or not?

I had a big argument with my friends about this. My school is one of the only schools in the country that does not have +'s and -'s....at least around here. Its straight A, B, C...etc. Next year, they are switching systems. My friends were freaking out...saying its not fair. Their argument is that you put in that extra work to finish with a 90 or a 91 on after final, you deserve an A. I disagree. Why do you deserve the same as the guy much smarter than you that got a 99? At any rate, why is an 80 the same as an 89, whereas the difference between an 89 and a 90 is huge? It just seems more logical to have more steps.

What do you think?

It doesn't matter in real life, so I don't give a $hit. How about that? It's not like you're going to get a pay increase that's going to be $1500 plus or minus, it's going to be $1500 and you'll hopefully have earned it. If not, school was useless to you anyway. 😉

We have +s and -s at my school. Can anyone tell me how that equates to your GPA? For example, would ANY B equate to a 3.00, or would a B+ be a 3.7, etc?

Eh, what about the guys who bust their ass only to get C's? They DESERVE A's but won't get them.

Maybe not when it comes to getting a job, but it makes a difference monetarily. For example, if you're on scholarship, any type, here, you need to keep a 3.0. I am VERY close to that 3.0, and I get $9,000/year. A grading system that can affect my grades by as much as, say, .4, makes a huge difference monetarily.

It all depends on how it averages out in your GPA. Your GPA would be more accurate with the + and - if it's factored in, therefore it would be more fair. However, if you want to join the rest of us that were on the 4 grade scale (not counting Fs) your GPA might be higher or lower depending on how hard you worked....you might get an edge from the scale.

Basically, their argument is they are engineers. My school is primarily an engineering school. I am in comp sci, which is in the school of enginieering, but we take different classes. Thus, to them, my major is a joke(which isnt true...they can use calculators in their math classes, we cant for example). They are saying I don't understand, that they can bust their ass that extra bit to get an A, and apparently I can't in my major, so I don't understand why they desreve an A. I still don't understand why that person deserves the same as the person who get a 99, just like I don't understand if you fall juuust under, why you deserve the same grade as the person who did less work or is less smart and got the 80.

We don't use the +/- stuff, just straight letter grades.

If they were to switch, I'd rather my college went to the system my high school used.
A: 100-94
B: 93-87
C: 86-78
D: 77-70
E/F: 69-0

Failing at my highschool would still get you a D or maybe C in college. That's just not right.

When I was there, my school was doing a +/- trial, recording official grades without them as we always have but also sending out grades and GPAs with the +/- factored in. I was there for four semesters of the trial and I think all four semesters, my GPA with the +/- was higher than it was without it. There were a few classes where I got a B+ and got more points than the official B. Based on that, I'd be for the +/- system, but I knew a lot of people that were against it for the opposite reason.

we have AB, BC, and CD for intermediate grades

Yup, and I HATE that as it totally screws me on grades every semester. I always liked the way a couple of my schools did it and just used the rounded percentage. There were never any questions then.
