I noticed that they were referring to FBS stats during the game this weekend.
What is FBS?

Google says:

FBS can refer to:
Federal Bureau of Statistics, the Statistics Division of the Government of Pakistan and the United Nations
Fetal bovine serum
Fatboy Slim, a British DJ, musician, and producer
The postnominal letters indicating fellowship of The Burgon Society, a research based award.
Fasting blood sugar, a laboratory test used to determine the level of glucose in the blood
Frozen Brain Syndrome, a brief headache caused by eating a cold substance rapidly
Football Bowl Subdivision, formerly known as Division I-A, an American football classification for NCAA collegiate football
Friern Barnet Secondary School, Barnet, UK
Fukuoka Broadcasting Corporation, a TV station in Japan, referred as FBS, acronym of Fukuoka Broadcasting System
Furness Building Society, Barrow-in-Furness, UK
Full Body Spinner, a combat robot weapon design
Friendship books, a form of mail art
Frontiers in Bioscience, academic journal
Ramallah Friends Schools, friends Boys School

My guess is the bold one

it's some scheme they came up with as more of the 1A teams starting regularly scheduling 1-AA games. a real sportscaster will still refer to the by 1A or 1AA.

It should be noted that the FCS does have a playoff. Any FBS school that really wanted a playoff could join FCS. There are currently more FCS schools then FBS schools.
