if you're applying to a tech school, would it be a good/bad idea to write on a subject related to technology. Or would that seem like you're trying too hard to get in. also can you assume that they know basic things like what c++ and basic are.

My guess would be that it's not a bad thing to try hard and never assume anyone knows anything.

Just don't try to show off by getting real technical or incorporating lines of code into your essay. Be yourself, express why you want to go and what you have that other applicants don't, and just let the ideas flow out. I prefer stating my reasons why I want to go indirectly, in the form of an anecdote or something like that but you can do whatever you want. That's what is so nice about college essays, you're not limited to anything... other than length that is.
