College dorms having to rewire

I don't know my system would take 7 alone, my digicam charger 1, I'd want a room fridge, probably a couple lights, many are running dual monitors now too, now add a roomie....I am sure girls want a hair dryer source, and a couple for other 120V 'personal' products....no more hiding sounds from their wombs from parents.

Å

we use a total of 18 sockets in our room. we are provided with 2-4outlets and 2-2outlets. so we also use 2 power strips

At home in my room I have a total of 14 things plugged in distributed through two 7 outlet power strips and one six outlet UPS. Doesn't surprise me that some people need 20 outlets.

2 fridges
1 stereo
2 nintendos
2 computers
2 monitors
2 printers
2 fans
2 sets of speakers
1 phone
1 dvd player/vcr combo
1 video switcher
2 alarm clocks
1 microwave
2 phone chargers
1 battery charger
2 lamps

I just counted up 26 off the top of my head... although a lot of them, such as our computers, are on surge protectors.

But still, 20 isn't much...

In my dorm room we have 8 plugs, but 4 of them are over the beds. Nowhere near enough plugs. We have power strips out the wazoo.

And on top of that, you had BETTER plan on having a 500w UPS for when the college screws up...

^^^This person speaks the truth. I learned that the hard way. UPS in a college dorm is a must.

Miami of Ohio in Oxford considers itself the private "mini-ivy league of the midwest". I'm not suprised they would pay that much to rewire for yuppie wanna-bes.

That being said, there's nothing wrong with having too many outlets... I just don't like the idea of a bunch of people saying a room needs remodeled because they won't use powerstrips like normal people.... most dorm rooms have 4 walls so really, how many outlets really need to be on each wall ?

I'll never live in a dorm...

lol I have so much stuff that I refuse to part with that I couldn't live in a dorm. I grew up in a large farmhouse, and I rewired it myself to upgrade it to about 10x the former electrical capacity it had before. Not to mention the phone wiring was ripped out and now there's miles of Cat5 lining the walls.

I've since moved out of that house, but the family still owns it. It's sitting vacant. The only reason I've not moved back into it is because I don't want to pay for satellite high-speed internet. There aren't any other broadband options available out there in the country. I could move a gig of files from the basement to the attic in a minute or two. But it would take me an hour to download an mp3 from the internet.

And yes, I just got out of high school. I was scheduled to start college this year, but decided to delay because I have an excellent job in IT that I would have to give up. If and when I leave that job, I'll go back to college. But believe me, I'll be staying in my own place, be it an apartment I rent, or one of the houses my family owns.

yea i thiunk I alone have 5 full powerstriips goin in out college house. I just read this article this morning in my local news paper. it had that same pic

you should see how fast the thing spins on out power box. im glad we dont pay for it. luckily out house can handle it.

last year we were in the dorm (a newly renovated one) and i had all my stuff in a quad and if the microwave and toaster overn went on at the same time it woudl flip the breaker. there were so few outlets that we had 4 powerstrips dasy chained together. running off an extension cord that went 1-3

I will be starting at a college of 8k people. The entire school only has a 10mb connection. I wonder what my system will do when I have my laser printer running in the dorm🙁

I just threw that in there for comparison. If the connection sucks that much, the odds are that the wiring will suck as well. Any even if that does not apply, this is ATOT..

Lets see.. I had last year -

pc, monitor, lamp, fan, speakers, digital camera battery recharger, phone charger, MX700 base station ,PS2 ,tv, razor, toothbrush, alarm clock, printer, refrig..

you can hardly count alarm clocks, cordless mice and stuff like that in the total count though, they have almost no draw. You have to count computers, lamps, microwaves, heaters (especially) etc.
