Anti-Perk: I don't know anyone within a state of Florida

I am a grad student at UF. PM me if you have any questions about the school, location, weather, whatever.

gainsville is way too hick and trashy to me. my gf went down there to visit their phd program and it wasn't too impressive of an area. if you're from chicago, you'll be shocked at the style of living in gainsville

Gainesville is actually your prototypical college town and is very progressive. It has a lot of features of a big city compressed into a small town, both good and bad. To say that it is "too hick and trashy" from a visit done by your girlfriend is a misinformed statement. The majority of the people at this school would not fit any definition of hick or trash. For the most part, this school draws from very wealthy students as is reflected by the higher cost of living in this area.

Why would not knowing anyone in college upon entry be a factor in your decision making? I would prefer to go to a college where I don't know anyone so that I can start fresh and make new friends. You'll make plenty of friends, trust me.

Go with UF!

Gainsville is in the middle of nowhere, highway wise. If you want to travel to say Daytona Beach, Tampa, Jacksonville, etc, you have to drive unusual amounts on backroads to get to a highway. There are thousands of UF minions about Florida as well, so it's rather devalued.

"Middle of nowhere, highway wise"? Gainesville is hardly far from a highway. About 3 miles down the road from my apartment lies one of the most major highways of the east coast, I-75. Along I-75, it is a 45 minute drive to the Florida Turnpike. Further along I-75, it is another hour to the city of Tampa. Get on the Turnpike instead and it would take you about an hour to get to Orlando. Go North on I-75 and you hit Atlanta. Granted, you do have to travel through some of the country's worst speed traps (according to Reader's Digest) to get to Jacksonville and you do have to take some small roads to get to Jacksonville but I have never considered that to be a deterring factor to going to either location. The complaint of middle of nowhere is one that I have never heard voiced about UF.

UIUC is an excellent technical school, one of the best nationwide.

Thats quite an offer they made, I'd take it up in a second.

edit: nvm, read that as they offered you that much to go there.

Then its a toss up.

I'd still go to U of I.

Go to Florida, get straight A's and then find a good graduate program

Unless the Illinois school is tops in whatever you are interested studying, it's not worth it taking on that much debt. You are talking around $400 a month or more at current rates.

um if you people didn't realize this, UF is a very good school and hard to get into for out of staters. UI is also well known as a great public schools. You will do well with either choice, but I don't understand why they offered someone instate 85k.

Infact, PrincetonReview.com lists average SAT for UF is 1340.

Illinois 1288

i grew up in FL and had a free ride to UF (or any other school in FL), but rejected them for a school in NY.

UF is a party school, and just about everyone drinks all the time. they are obsessed with the gators and a high percentage of the people are latino. if you like hot cuban women, UF is the school for you.

i'd choose university of illinois. i know a lot more normal people who came from there than from UF.

Approximately 23 percent of the members of the UF student body are minorities with 7.2 percent of the student population consisting of African- American students, 9.6 percent Hispanic students, and 6.8 percent Asian-American or Pacific Islander students.

how does UIUC cost $85K for 4 years if you are a resident of IL? That sounds like the out of state tuition.

out of state total cost/year is $38,000... i got accepted to UIUC, but they hardly offered me anything.. so I'm going to Drexel in Philly where I got tons of $$ and am pursuing my PhD (I got into their BS/PHD program)

No it isn't. It's $28,000. I'm a junior so it might be slightly higher if you're an incoming freshman with the locked-rate tuition, but I find it hard to believe that it's $38,000.
