College Dilemma

Well college time has come around, and there are two that are open to my price range. I live in a suburb of Chicago, by the way.

College one: The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Offer: $85,000 for four years, no scholarships or low-interest loans deducted. Got into the honors program
Perk: Several of my friends are going to the university.

College two: The University of Florida at Gainesville
Offer: $10,000 for four years, no scholarships or low-interest loans dedducted. Honors program, honors college housing
Anti-Perk: I don't know anyone within a state of Florida

I'm really not sure here...money isn't THAT much of an issue, but $70,000 sure does make a difference.

Give me a hand?

UI = better chance of getting a good job after graduation.
UF = better chance of getting booty any day of the week.

Wont matter if your friends will go there too, as you wont take the same classes, nor will you even necessarily want to hang out anymore either. To be able to wave at them once a week is hardly worth being a decision factor.

how does UIUC cost $85K for 4 years if you are a resident of IL? That sounds like the out of state tuition.

UIUC Engineering all the way. And there are plenty of hotties walking about campus here. After all, this IS Hugh Heffner's Alma Mater.

If you are a serious student (i.e. do all your work and want the best education) go for the former. If you are lazy and think college is just a free ride extension of high school but without the parents to keep you from drinking and catching things that will make your peepee fall off then the latter for sure.

and this is REALLY what matters! seriously!

DO you want to have fun IN collegeor after college?

None of us are fit to make this decision for you. If it were my decision, i would be forced to go to UF because my family doesn't have the kind of money for a prestigious school. Its not about the school in the end, its about what you do while you're there.

out of state total cost/year is $38,000... i got accepted to UIUC, but they hardly offered me anything.. so I'm going to Drexel in Philly where I got tons of $$ and am pursuing my PhD (I got into their BS/PHD program)

gainsville is way too hick and trashy to me. my gf went down there to visit their phd program and it wasn't too impressive of an area. if you're from chicago, you'll be shocked at the style of living in gainsville

Thanks for all of the input! Of course, the poll's not going to be the deciding factor, but I really appreciate all the advice and info.

Yes, I am a very serious student. I've been admitted to Brown and Hopkins, but my family simply doesn't have the money.

Gainsville is in the middle of nowhere, highway wise. If you want to travel to say Daytona Beach, Tampa, Jacksonville, etc, you have to drive unusual amounts on backroads to get to a highway. There are thousands of UF minions about Florida as well, so it's rather devalued.

Seriously though, but what are you planning on studying? Pick a better school in Florida for what you want to do. Personally, I'm go to Embry-Riddle, an engineering school.

As for not knowing anyone, that is not even an issue. Seriously, don't worry about it - nobody knows anyone anyway at the start of the year.
