I'd get an Apple before a Dell. When I buy a lappy in the not too distant future it'll either be an IBM or Toshiba.

Depends what you'll use it for.

If it's to show off your geek factor/size of your wallet, go for the Powerbook. Something to "impress" ppl.

If you just really like Apples and want one, go for the Ibook.

If you want something that's liable to be a bit more compatable and easier to adapt to any on campus networks and file systems, might consider the Dell.

In the end, it all boils down to what you want to do with it. Pick the one that allows you use the greatest number of programs that you're liable to need during the year. I'd personally go for the Dell, as my campus is primarily Unix and Windows based, with the only Apples existing in the art departments. Well, that and I'm not an Apple person at all.

If you will have a powerful desktop as well, get the lightest one possible. I bought a laptop and never end up using it becuase it is too heavy to carry around all over the place.

Hmm well dell has a on campus shop you could say, so if i bought a pc laptop it would be a dell.

Uses would be, internet, notes, and chat (AIM).

Not a compelling reason unless you're getting a mean discount (which doesn't seem to be the case).

save your $$$, get a good desktop instead. i stopped using my laptop in the classroom after a month.

Unless you campus does not have free student internet access (which I'd find hard to believe) and that's all you're going to use it for, you don't need a laptop.

Whatever works with the programs you're going to have to use (like CAD or Mathmatica or whatever).

I should add that all of those are extreme overkill for "taking notes". You don't need a DVD burner or anything like that. Just get something that will run Windows XP/Word or Debian Gnome/AbiWord if you're just going to take notes.

ok i want a laptop because my desktop othough plenty powerful (xp 2000+, etc) is way to big to fit on the desk. I want a laptop because i want to take one to class, and be able to go anywhere on campus and have in in my pack (almost the whole campus is wireless).

The MAIN thing is that only some of it is my money, i'm gettin 2k from the p's for graduation.

Over kill yes for taking notes, but hey i want one to mabe play a lil counterstrike sitin outside if i feel then need.

for the price you listed i'd definitely get the powerbook. Why does the 600M looks way to expensive, If i'm not mistaken you can purchase 600M for less than $2000?

Hey nothing wrong with telling the truth. I just laugh at people who say the sole reason they are getting a laptop is so they can use it to take notes in class. For the REAL reason you're getting the laptop for, a PC laptop would be more ideal because more games are released on PC than Mac.

If you want Apple, get Apple.

This is what I would do: With a third of my budget, I would get an used IBM Thinkpad and I would get a desktop system with the rest

there are a lot of ibooks at my work. they are no fun.
if you want to play a lot of games (old and new alike) i think i would shy away from a mac.

ok i haven't played a game that was important (where i wanted to play it like more than once a week) in like 2 years.
