I don't why we need books in college. The professors I have right now give almost exact notes and if you copy the notes you have the answers for the test. I've just started college but this is what I see.

most profs don't go over all the material that's on the test in class, if you don't read your books you're ho'd.

I guess it all depends on whether you want to simply pass your classes, or actually learn something. ;)

It cracks me up when people complain about stuff that shows up on the test that wasn't in the lecture.

It also cracks me up when people complain that there isn't a curve, ask what's going to be on the test, and when they get poor grades they blame the professor for being foreign, mean, etc. ;)

Yeah, textbooks aren't necessary. If my company didn't pay for mine, I would've stopped buying them years ago.

Sorry, but I've seen some professors with accents so heavy you cannot understand words they're saying. Though the book is important, if I have to interpret my professor's speech there's a problem.

The best is when there is a class that EVERY SINGLE student is REQUIRED to take.
And it includes a textbook that is written by the guy that teaches the class.
And every year they release a new "EDITION" so that you can't sell it back to the bookstore.
And they require you to use this one-year subscription to a web research portal so that you can't give sell the book to someone else because the subscription will be expired next year when they go to use it.
And they DON'T EVEN CORRECT THE GODDAM TYPOS IN THIS NEW "EDITION" LET ALONE MAKE ANY REAL EDITIONS.

So this is OBVIOUSLY a cash-cow of royalties for the professor, guaranteed sale of 2000 units of his book every year.

Oh, it's ALL about educating me....Riiiiight.....

It all depends on what kind of prof you have, keystroker. I've had profs who use the lecture notes exclusively (who require (WASTE) or don't require a book (GOOD)), profs who use half and half (need book), and those who go strictly off the book (NEED BOOK!).

And while on the subject, I'm about to go shell out $300+ for 3 books- I was able to find two others for $75 online.

There's a prof like that here, Jzero, but he doesn't release a new edition every year- just makes everyone buy HIS book at 90 bucks a pop. And we didn't even use it! Looked like unorganized crap when I was going through it- pretty unprofessional.

By my junior year, I realized that I had until mid-way through the semester to buy books, and except for classes that required many small books, for classes that had just 1-3 textbooks, I found that it was often a wise decision to wait to see if the book was actually going to be needed, or was going to be used for more than one lecture and couldn't be borrowed from a classmate.
My senior year I didn't buy a single text book. I took some pretty abstract classes, but nonetheless, the few that had "required texts" hardly even mentioned them.

I agree. I've had some easy classes become hard just because I have to try and understand the professor rather than try to understand the material.
