College Bike

I am moving up to college mentioned in my other thread about beer and I need a new bike. Its a pretty small campus but a bike would help a lot. My price range is up to about 300 bucks..but the cheaper the better.

My questions are...

Which kind of bike should i get...road/mountain/hybrid..

and then which one would u reccommend..

well, do you ever plan on going trail biking or offroading?

cause i mean i might go off roading sometime..u never know..i do live in PA where mountains are all around...and i will be going over grass and such to get to class. The fact i that I have never had a road bike and dont know how they do on even a little bit of grass and such.

I've been looking around for one myself. I've decided to go mountain and used. Either a decent bike store brand bike for $150 or less or a used cheapo department store brand for next to nothing and just throw it away when I am done. Haven't had much luck locally but e-bay has some decent deals and craigslist might not be dead around you like it is here. I'd rather get a decent higher quallity used bike for around $100-$150 then spend a $100 on a cheap bike with crappy parts. A lot of the bike stores sell used stuff too so they are worth a look.

no need to spend any real $$ unless you're going to care for the bike. if the bike is staying outside, it will be crap in a couple of years, assuming it doesn't get stolen first.

I suggest something like the Specialized Hard Rock. It's a cheaper "mountain" bike that will get the job done. You probably won't want a real road bike because it's a little harder to handle in crowds and such. hybrids are for old people... If money is a real issue, you could try to find some local police auctions. Sometimes there are ok bikes there.

Make sure you don't have too nice of a bike, otherwise it will get stolen... If bike theft is a big issue at your school, you might even consider spray painting the frame to make it look bad.

Get a big frickin chain to lock that bike to the biggest bike rack you can find.

Finally, don't leave it out in the rain. Every time I see students do that it drives me crazy...

no joke cheetah. Leaving bikes in the rain is a bad thing. I feel sorry everytime I see mine outside, but I can't do anything, there's no room🙁 Mountain bikes will give you a better deal. If you go to retailers they will often give you free service for a year to buy their bikes. Look for last years models if you do because they will be cheaper. If you plan on doing any serious biking get a good name brand bike. I'm a big fan of specialized. Don't get the ones from walmart or target, most have really cheap components and the frames are excessively heavy.

I got a 600cc sportbike... too lazy to pedal 🙂

Look around your campus postings and such. Probably tons of bikes for sale at next to nothing. All junkers but that's all you really need. If you want a nice bike, fine, but keep it locked up inside your room at all times. Use the junker for campus commuting.

If you do get a decent bike invest in locks that lock your tires on and your seat. If you do that and lock it with something that cost over $10 you should have no problem.

I had not one...not two...but THREE bikes stolen during my years at college...1 was a gary fisher, the other two were walmart bikes....all 3 were locked down (using kyrptonite U locks) and found the lock cut or smashed on the ground after being stolen.
That being said, whatever you find comfortable at walmart or at a yard sale would be best...cheap is the key here...anything expensive would most likely get stolen at some point

Which is why I don't have a bike at college. Then again it takes me only 15 minutes to walk across campus. 10 if I speed walk.

Spend as little as possible. Get a Target/WalMart bike or go with a Giant. I lost one bike to a thief and caught another as he was sawing through my lock (kryptonite).

Generally on my relatively small campus, all stolen bikes are found either back at the dorm from which they were taken, or at one of the main academic buildings. Other people's unsecured bikes help keep students on time for class 😛
