I've never had quarters..but 18 hours in a semester is a lot of class time. Fortunately, I didn't have to study much for any of it. :p

I suppose that would depend entirely on the school and what classes you're taking...

I preferred taking 12 hours each semester senior year.

It depends on your major. If you're an Engineering/Science major, it sucks.

i had one 20 unit quarter towards the end for my civil BS degree in UCD. five 4-unit classes plus working part time was hard, but not too difficult as i still found time to hang out and get drunk every now and then.

How did you end up in that situation?

Ive had 20hrs in both quarters and semesters since my school decided to switch from quarters to semesters. Both is quite a bit of class time. The Quarter was more crunchtime and rushed - basically "midterm 1" then "midterm2" then "midterm3" then final all separated by 2 weeks. The first 3 weeks were without any tests.

This test after test after test got pretty stressful during the Organic Chemistry/Thermodynamics/Transport Phenomina days.

(quarter = 10 weeks)
